Ryan - Drawing by Ryan Mendoza - 2000
Located in Roma, IT
Ryan is a contemporary artwork realized by Ryan Mendoza in 2000. Pencil and charcoal on paper. Hand signed on the lower margin. Provenance: Galleria Massimo Minini, Brescia Born in 1971 in New York, Mendoza's personal story is subsequently intertwined with the two extremes of Europe, Naples and Berlin, the two cities in which he has lived and worked up to now. In his works he represents complex theatricality, models anatomies, doses colours, calibrates lights, draws on a rich archive of memories, confusing ancient pictorial wisdom and contemporary risks. The artist's attention is particularly focused on portraits in which he carries out distortions and alterations: he exhibits perspective disproportions, reveals anatomical dissonances, manifests dystonias between the characters in the foreground and the backgrounds. His characters appear "possessed", it is no coincidence that the title of the 2010 solo show at the Muse d'Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina in Naples is "The possessed...

Olive Grove with Hills in the Distance - Charcoal Drawing, Greek Island, Country
Located in New York, NY
This 17.5 x 35 inches black and white chalk drawing on paper represents a Greek landscape. Two olive trees are in the foreground, with the countryside extending behind in the distant horizon. Tzannes is an American painter of Greek origins. In his twenties, he visited Kythera, the Greek island of his father's birth. Since then, the island has become the primary reference of his creativity. Using black and white to represent this landscape gives the mighty hundred-year-old olive trees a monumental presence. The viewer is drawn into the timeless, spiritual quality of the Greek landscape. Despite the absence of color, Tzannes' mastery of drawing creates a tangible effect of the Greek light...

Shizico Yi is known for her expressive and distinctive artistic style, particularly evident in her mesmerizing ink drawings. Rather than relying on photographs, Shizico paints life as the moments unfold, capturing consecutive mornings spent with her cherished cat, Sonny in a series of paintings and postcard projects. Created plein air and in situ, these scenes unfold over consecutive mornings, with Shizico's cherished cat as the captivating focal point. Set against the backdrop their garden plants, the artwork elevates daily routines into moments of awe and tranquil reflection. Offering a portal into the serene beauty of everyday life; the interplay the comforting presence of a feline companion and the natural surroundings create a captivating narrative that elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary. Artist: Roy De Forest Title: Taylor Family Size: 29.5 x 41 Inches Medium: Acrylic, pastel, charcoal, ink, pencil and glitter on paper, in artist's frame Edition: Original Year: 1995 Notes: Hand Signed and Dated (Twice, Upper Center Sheet and Lower Right Mount) Sold in the Original Artist Made Frame, As Is. Roy De Forest arrived in San Francisco in 1950 to enroll at the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA). He later went on to teach at the University of California, Davis, where he dedicated nearly three decades of his career. This move to the Bay Area, far removed from the art epicenter of New York, played a significant role in shaping an artistic movement known as "funk," a term coined by Peter Selz of the University of California's Berkeley Art Museum in 1967. This aesthetic celebrated the unconventional, "lowbrow," and seemingly unsophisticated aspects of art. Notably, artists like Jim Nutt...

A 1950s Pastel and Charcoal Drawing of a Hockey Game by Francis Chapin
Located in Chicago, IL
Perfect for your hockey enthusiast! A 1950s pastel on paper drawing of a hockey game by Francis Chapin. Image size: 9" x 12". Matted size: 14" x 18". Provenance: Estate of the artist. Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington & Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). Chapin’s contemporaries among Chicago’s artists included such luminaries as Ivan Le Lorraine Albright...
