Provenance: Gifted as a wedding present to Kit Hesketh-Harvey by his future wife. The artist was a friend of the couple and they had introduced Core to FFooks. Kit Hesketh Harvey co-wrote the screenplay (with James Ivory) for E.M.Forster’s Maurice and he had called upon Ffooks, who was renowned for his horsemanship, to be a stunt double for the equestrian scenes in this iconic film.
Philp Core grew up in New Orleans, the son of a well-to-do family. At just seven he won the Vieux Carré Open Artists Competition. He was sent to a military academy, and from 1963 to the Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts. He attended Harvard University, where he won a number of art and literature prizes. As a schoolboy he self-published a booklet of drawings Palm Fronde Alphabet. An interest in Aubrey Beardsley and fin de siècle artists and writers, led to him spending time in Paris working with Philippe Jullian on his book The Symbolists, before returning to Harvard to complete an honours thesis on Belgian symbolist Fernand Khnopff. He graduated in 1973.
Under the pseudonym Féllippé Fecit, he produced a series of erotic drawings for the poet John Glassco for his book Squire Hardman, and in 1968 in the Japanese style for The Temple of Pederasty, a free adaption by Glassco of a work by Japanese expatriate writer Ken Sato.

Here for your consideration is a very well executed still life with apples by the American artist, Richard C. Pionk. Signed lower right “Pionk”. Oil paint on card stock. Condition is excellent. Richard Cletus Pionk (April 26, 1936 – June 5, 2007), beloved instructor of painting at the Art Students League of New York and president of the Salmagundi Club, died June 5, 2007, but his work stands as a masterclass in still life painting, primarily in oils and pastels.
Born April 26, 1936 in Moose Lake, Minnesota Pionk moved to New York City where he made a life revolving around painting and teaching.
Best known for his still lifes, portraits, and interior scenes in oils and pastels, Pionk learned much about classical still life painting by spending hours in his beloved museums, including the Brooklyn Museum and other New York museums, as well as the École du Louvre in Paris. Pionk studied the works of many artists, in particular Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, Antoine Vollon, and Henri Fantin-Latour.
He also studied with Daniel Green and Sidney E. Dickinson at the Art Students League of New York. He later taught there, and at the Pastel Society of America School and the National Arts Club in New York. He was also the longest running president of the Salmagundi Club.
During his accomplished art career, Pionk earned more than 100 awards from the Pastel Society of America, Audubon Artists, National Arts Club, and numerous other professional associations. In 1984, he was named Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America, and in 1997 was inducted into the Pastel Hall of Fame. In 1994, his work was included in the Taiwanese exhibit, “Contemporary Pastel Artists...

Aaron Bohrod's work has not been limited to one style or medium. Initially recognized as a regionalist painter of American scenes, particularly of his native Chicago, Bohrod later devoted himself to detailed still-life paintings rendered in the trompe l'oeil style. He also worked for several years in ceramics and wrote a book on pottery.
Born in 1907, Bohrod began his studies at Chicago's Crane Junior College in 1925, and two years later enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. But it was at the Art Students League in New York City, from 1930 to 1932, that he studied under the man believed to be his most significant early influence, John Sloan. Sloan's romantic realism is reflected in the many depictions of Chicago life...
