The artist has selected the iconic landmark of Kolkata city, during the peak of the British Empire in India. This ethereal scene with the Heritage Building and motor cab is captivating and encapsulates the character of the heritage city with drama and poise. The watercolor artist has avoided excessive detailing and by highlighting just the key features of a Heritage Building & Old Kolkata Streets with crumbling structures, results in a fresh, inviting composition.
Style : Saikat does his painting in stages, starting with large, vague color areas established on wet paper, then refines the image through a sequence of washes and glazes, making the works as durable as oils or acrylics. The pigments are held by arabic gum with additives like glycerine and solvents that give the medium durability.
Watercolors appear more vivid than acrylics or oils because the pigments are laid down in a more pure form with fewer fillers obscuring the pigment colors. Multiple layers of watercolor thus achieve a very luminous effect. Water being an active and complex partner in the watercolor painting process, it changes the outlines and appearance of the paint as it dries. Saikat has mastered the difficult art of anticipating and leveraging the behavior of water, rather than attempting to control it.
Saikat uses the ‘wash’, ‘glaze’ and ‘wet in wet’ methods of application to produce a huge variety of striking works, definitely worth collecting.
In my watercolour paintings, the beauty lies in the freshness of colours, their transparency and purity along with a slightly unfinished look resulting in a more natural effect. My watercolours try infusing life in common place objects and making them look spectacularly real.

Water Tower Sculpture: 'Grey Dog'

The images on the water towers are from the artist sketchbook. It was also a part of a wheatpaste street art initiative from 2020. During the COVID lockdown he wanted to inject a little bit of nature back in downtown New York. Referencing not only wildlife in general but also specifically from the neighborhood. In this series you might find dogs or cats from artists he personally knows but you might find a raccoon that somehow invaded the city.
Ethan Minsker's descriptors include writer, filmmaker, artist, publisher, and zine creator. His work chronicles the lifestyles and cultures of overlooked and underappreciated artists. He was a founding member of the Antagonist Art Movement, a New York City-based group of artists, writers, and musicians who promoted work by up-and-coming talent between 2000 and 2011. Ethan was the recipient of the Acker Award for Visual Arts in 2017. He was also the creator and editor-in-chief of Psycho Moto Zine, which has been in publication from 1988–present. He received his B.F.A. in Film with honors from the School of the Visual Arts and his masters in Media from the New School. Born in Fayoum to a big family of 5 brothers and sisters. In 1938 he meets the famous painter Hussein Bikar and he becomes his student in the Faculty of Arts in Qena. He remained much attached to his professor all through his life. In 1940 he meets Hussein Youssef Amin and the Group of Contemporary Art at the secondary school of Farouk First in Abasya district in Cairo when he was introduced to surrealism for the first time. In 1943 he becomes a student at the Faculty of Fine Arts and graduates with excellence and honors in 1947. In 1948 he becomes an assistant to the interior decoration section at the FFA. He is then sent to a mission in Paris in 1952 and he becomes a student to Paul Colin and A.Marie Cassandre for publicity and theatre design. He then moves to Rome in 1956 to study cinema design. In 1957 he received the international prize in painting from San Vito Romano, Italy, and obtains his Ph.D. from Centro Sperimental di Cinemato Grafia.
