About the Item

"Bourrée Fantasque #11 Blue", Pastel on Paper by Artist Francisco Moncion, is a Mid-20th Century fantasy image inspired by George Balanchine's 1949 ballet of the same name for the New York City Ballet. "Bourrée Fantasque #15 - #22" are currently featured on "Étoile" Amazon's dance/drama TV Series. There are 24 unique and highly creative works in the "Bourrée Fantasque" series. Executed on paper in rich pastel with bold pencil lines, images suggest dancing figures and playful sets and costumes. Moncion is known for his vibrant color palate often highlighting brilliant orange and yellows against subtle blues and apricot drawing dynamics from his Dominican-Latino-American heritage. All have a statement of linear presence and are rooted in the modern esthetic of the mid-20th Century. Pastels are 17 x 14 inches. They are backed and matted. The mats are a light tan color selected by the artist to complement the individual piece. Total size with Mat is 23.5 x 20.5 inches. They are sent in the mat and the mat is included in the price. Pastels are sent UNFRAMED. However, FRAMING is an option and we are happy to frame the works prior to shipping. Frame is a matte black medium profile wood 1 9/16 inch wide and 13/16 inch deep. We use UV Acrylic and Archival Mounting Board for maximum protection of the artwork and the piece will arrive ready for hanging. Additional charge for framing is $125. Please specify when ordering. Francisco Moncion (1918 – 1995) was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet and a respected New York artist. He worked with Salvador Dali, Miro, Picasso, and Corrado Cagli. Over the course of his forty year dance career, choreographers George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins created 22 major roles for Moncion including leads in “Orpheus", "La Valse”, "Firebird", and "Afternoon of a Faun". Moncion was frequently photographed by George Platt Lynes and Carl van Vechten. This is a rare opportunity to own a fine example of Moncion's work which is a culmination of the modern Mid-20th Century art, design and theater esthetics.

It was love at first sight and a few weeks after their first encounter at the Black Cat in San Francisco's North Beach, they got married and enjoyed a passionate, life-long romance. Shortly after he finished school, Opper worked briefly as a decorator’s assistant and then started his career as a commercial artist, working for several firms such as Fibreboard, Beatrix Food and Precision. Working full-time and dedicating himself to having a rich family life occupied most of Opper's time, but he continued to be creative.
