The title of this work translates to “the leader” and features an antique flag holster that has been adhered to the surface of the canvas. Historically, flag holders are positioned at the front of an organized military tour, thus here becomes a representation of one who leads a journey.
The phallic intervention placed in the center of the canvas represents masculinity, bravery, and Hlobo’s own body and male identity. His work seeks to navigate multiplicity in relation to identity, looking for ways to embody (or break with) a universal masculine bravery.
Hlobo often incorporates found objects into his work such as colonial furniture, antique shoes, and organic material as a way to represent his ethnic heritage and how it is viewed in contemporary culture.
The antique flag holster also adds a political dimension to the work. As a colonized country that has at times been ruled by the military, this work questions acts of bravery in South Africa, as well as how masculinity is constructed within a colonized country. When beginning a work, Hlobo typically has no predetermined result in mind. He allows himself to work instinctively and draws his forms directly onto canvas from his subconscious. He has noted that this is a cathartic experience, and throughout this process his work continues to evolve as it is greatly influenced by his emotional states.
