About the Item

Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, the founder of Cubism, and one of those who radically transformed the understanding of form, space, and the very language of art. His work encompassed painting, sculpture, and ceramics, reflecting his relentless search for new means of expression. At the end of World War II, Picasso settled in the south of France. In 1946, during the exhibition “Ceramics, Flowers, and Fragrance” in Vallauris, the artist met the Ramie family — owners of the Madoura pottery studio. It was there that Picasso first experimented with clay and soon discovered a new material capable of embodying his painterly ideas in three-dimensional form. Vallauris became the center of his ceramic creativity, and the collaboration with Madoura one of the most fruitful periods of his career: between 1947 and 1971, he created over 3,600 ceramic works — vases, plates, dishes, and pitchers, some produced in limited editions. The work “Bouquet à la pomme” (Bouquet with Apple) demonstrates the characteristic combination of freedom of line and expressive use of color found in Picasso’s late period. The bouquet of flowers and the small apple in the lower corner are rendered with painterly spontaneity: deep greens and bright yellows contrast with dark outlines and a soft turquoise background. Through his delicate treatment of color and light, Picasso imbued the composition with an inner radiance, transforming a simple still-life scene into a poetic ceramic vision. This type of plate was conceived on January 22, 1956, and executed in an edition of 400. The work is recorded in Alain Ramié, Catalogue of the Ceramics of Pablo Picasso, 1947–1971, Madoura Gallery, 1988, listed and illustrated as catalogue raisonné no. 307. You can acquire this outstanding ceramic piece and become part of Picasso’s artistic legacy.
