About the Item

Richard Overstreet (American, 20th c.) Reclining Figure Pastel Painting Brilliant original pastel painting by noted American artist Richard Overstreet. A figure in a standing reclining position. From his "Bather" series c.1985. Original pastel on paper. Dimensions 45" x 50". The maple frame measures 48" x 54". Signed by the artist. Very good condition. Richard Overstreet creates a world of ambiguities inhabited by shadowy figures. Details are obscured beneath layers of paint or are sketched in so lightly as to be almost imperceptible. Overstreet’s paintings are evocative more than descriptive, and focus less on the figures than the drama that results from their interaction within a given, yet purposely vague, situation. Richard Overstreet studied art history at the University of Berkeley. Holder of a Master in Fine Arts, he moved to Paris in 1968 where he became, among other things, a journalist for Time Life. From 1963 to 1967, he was a photographer, assistant to producer Alexandre Mnouchkine and production assistant for Associated Artists. It was during these years that he collaborated with Joseph Mankiewicz, François Truffaut, Philippe de Broca and Louis Malle. In 1968, he was first assistant director with John Huston, then with Anatole Litvak and Joseph Losey. From 1975, he devoted himself entirely to painting and photography; many exhibitions are dedicated to his work: Galerie Lambert Monet, Geneva, 1972, 1982; Roy Boyd Gallery, Chicago and Los Angeles, 1983, 1984, 1986; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, 1986; Galerie Montenay, Paris, 1993; Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco, California, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005, 2006. A great friend of Leonor Fini, he is very involved in promoting the artist’s work. He is the author of the photographs in the book Miroir des chats. He also collaborated on four retrospective exhibitions and made possible the reconstruction of the famous Leonor Fini salon as part of a permanent exhibition of the artist's works at the Saint-Roch hospice museum in Issoudun. He is a regular exhibition curator at the Galerie Minsky in Paris, a place devoted exclusively to the work of Leonor Fini.

Cook has been exhibiting for over 25 years and has received countless awards including from the British Council, the Arts Council and The Elephant Trust Award (twice). In 2001 he was given a solo show at Tate St Ives with a related publication, and a major painting was acquired for the collection in 2006. Further works are held in the British Museum collection. Richard Cook’s work has been in countless exhibitions across the world and today sits in permanent collections at The Tate, London, The Arts Council, London, The British Museum, Manchester City Art Gallery and with Deutsche Bank, London. Richard Cook’s paintings are a combination of the constant and the fleeting. His landscapes show places that are always there, but the moment he visits them to make his preparatory drawings are not. Each time, the people will be different and the weather conditions will have altered, often radically so. The trees, buildings and other topographical features provide the framework for the true subject of the painting; the artists’ own place in that landscape and his personal response to the ever-changing light. For Richard Cook, the act of painting is an attempt to pin down a memory of a precise moment and to render the impermanent permanent. Richard Cook is a contemporary of Richard Long, who was in the year before him at St Martins, both artists transmute – in very different ways – their experiences of nature into their art. Cook has a real appreciation and understanding of the English landscape tradition. Since his successful exhibition at Tate St Ives, Cook has worked intensely for years at achieving a mature frequency of style with a vocabulary that is recognizably his. For Cook colours are strongly associated with the emotions and in a sense the emotions take on a physical form in his paintings. The subtlety of tone and hue expressed in these works is noticeably reticent and tone is deployed with rigorous efficiency throughout. Cook is attracted to bleak, rough, elementals aspects. We are delighted to be able to offer an exclusive, historical selection of Richard’s pieces that have hitherto remained “off-grid” and are now available for the first time.
