About the Item
Richard Overstreet (American, 20th c.) Reclining Figure Pastel Painting
Brilliant original pastel painting by noted American artist Richard Overstreet.
A figure in a standing reclining position. From his "Bather" series c.1985.
Original pastel on paper. Dimensions 45" x 50". The maple frame measures 48" x 54".
Signed by the artist. Very good condition.
Richard Overstreet creates a world of ambiguities inhabited by shadowy figures. Details are obscured beneath layers of paint or are sketched in so lightly as to be almost imperceptible. Overstreet’s paintings are evocative more than descriptive, and focus less on the figures than the drama that results from their interaction within a given, yet purposely vague, situation.
Richard Overstreet studied art history at the University of Berkeley. Holder of a Master in Fine Arts, he moved to Paris in 1968 where he became, among other things, a journalist for Time Life.
From 1963 to 1967, he was a photographer, assistant to producer Alexandre Mnouchkine and production assistant for Associated Artists. It was during these years that he collaborated with Joseph Mankiewicz, François Truffaut, Philippe de Broca and Louis Malle.
In 1968, he was first assistant director with John Huston, then with Anatole Litvak and Joseph Losey.
From 1975, he devoted himself entirely to painting and photography; many exhibitions are dedicated to his work:
Galerie Lambert Monet, Geneva, 1972, 1982;
Roy Boyd Gallery, Chicago and Los Angeles, 1983, 1984, 1986;
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, 1986;
Galerie Montenay, Paris, 1993;
Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco, California, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005, 2006.
A great friend of Leonor Fini, he is very involved in promoting the artist’s work. He is the author of the photographs in the book Miroir des chats. He also collaborated on four retrospective exhibitions and made possible the reconstruction of the famous Leonor Fini salon as part of a permanent exhibition of the artist's works at the Saint-Roch hospice museum in Issoudun. He is a regular exhibition curator at the Galerie Minsky in Paris, a place devoted exclusively to the work of Leonor Fini.

Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings.
From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League.
Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...
