About the Item
This antique architectural fragment beautifully exemplifies the textured wear and soft patina that only time can achieve. Given its cusped arch shape and flame-like corners, the panel may have originated as an overhead element to a door, archway, or shrine display. The flat surface is etched with geometric patterns and floral scrollwork and colored by traces of red lacquer, paint and gilt pigments.
From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.

Upon discovering a weathered steel drum that had been warped to resemble the sleeve of a garment, artist Gordon Chandler was inspired to embark on a series of kimono sculptures formed from found metal scraps. With an eye to the aesthetic possibilities of this humble material, Chandler invests the reclaimed steel with sculptural fluidity and a wry sense of form.
Flattened with the center portion rolled out, this discarded barrel takes on the look of a traditional kimono...
