You ask why this pack is called Mayday ? Well, the pack was finished on the 1st of May, 1989 – The day Steven Denis won the World Snooker Championship. Karl was a passionate snooker fan and this is how he marked the victory of his hero, who he also made the joker of this pack. The proof sheet printed in blue depicts all the court cards, title card, joker & that extra SD joker and the box in which the pack would live. Sheet is in good condition and suitable to be framed. Karl was a brilliant playing card maker and certainly one of the most genius artist-craftsmen I had the pleasure to learn about his work and know. This pair is a fine example of ivory carving done by Inuit natives; Native Americans who live within and just below the Arctic Circle. Each year they procured a substantial amount of ivory from their walrus kills. The raw ivory was usually thrown on top of their huts to weather and properly season. Proper seasoning caused the ivory to dry from the inside out and thus rarely cracks. Hand-made tools were improvised for carving the ivory and bow-string hand drills were also in use. Ivory carving has been practiced by the Inuit for over 2,000 years and traditionally only Inuit men were allowed to carve objects out of ivory, bone, and wood. Jean-Michel Basquiat (untitled), 'MAN MADE Sweatshirt', c. 1979: Basquiat produced this rare original hand-painted sweatshirt (among others, with only few known to have survived) for the purposes of selling these on his own and through the historic downtown fashion boutique, Patricia Field’s. Basquiat was captured wearing a similar example in the well publicized 1979 photo, 'Basquiat Dancing at The Mudd Club' by Nicholas Taylor of Gray. This double-sided work notably features Basquiat’s ‘MANMADE’ tag - Basquiat’s alias after he took to the streets to declare “SAMO is Dead”. The work is further highlighted by Basquiat’s ‘BAD’ motif - uniquely paralleling his consideration to naming his band, ‘Bad Fools’ prior to Gray. In trademark Basquiat style, we also find the vertically spaced ‘E’ on both sides of the piece, as well as dashed lines which would appear in many of the artist’s Anti-Product cards, early drawings and more. The work emanates directly from the collection of world renowned author Lucy Sante (formerly Luc Sante). As it is well publicized, Basquiat worked with Sante in 1979/80 on the downtown-art scene publication, ‘Stranded’ (New York, 1980). Medium: Acrylic on cotton sweatshirt (double-sided artwork). Executed circa 1979/1980. Dimensions: 16.5 x 22 inches (outstretched cuff to cuff: 50 inches & sleeve length: 18 inches). Condition: In good overall vintage condition. Bright well-preserved colors; some minor discoloration in several areas due to normal age related wear and use; scattered stains located on the hem, inner arm area(s) and cuffs; scattered minor pilling; loose thread on the reverse of hem. Basquiat's artwork throughout remains fully intact. Unique. One of a kind. Signed ‘MANMADE’ and numbered 5/100 on the reverse. Cuthbert "CB" Bradley for Vanity Fair Magazine "A Judge" - The Rev Cecil Legard 11 July 1901 Lithograph 21 x 37 cm CB's cartoon depicts The Rev Cecil Legard (1843-1918), the Rector of Cottesbrooke and heir to the baronetcy. As well as a clergyman, Legard was a noted sportsman and hound expert; he was a steeplechase rider, and also edited the Foxhound Kennel Stud Book. CB depicts him judging hounds, excellently outfitted; as the biography on the reverse of the mounted lithograph notes, he might be 'the best judge of a foxhound in England'. A copy of the cartoon is held by the Kingston Lacy Estate in Dorset. Her fluency with the material, which comes so natural to Gun Gordillo, makes her works unusually suited to function in many different context in a public milieu. Dolerite, lead, copper, and zinc plate in combination with contemporary fragile art materials such as glass, plexiglass and, above all, neon light makes her works stand out among those which have been created with light as the basic architecture of their artistic expression. There is a decidedly personal angle to her way of dealing with neon light which gives it a poetic dimension in marked contrast to the harsh stridency of advertising signs. Gordillo's work has been shown at several major solo exhibitions, most recently in 2015 at the famous French galerie denise rené, Paris. She has worked with the legendary gallerist Denise Rene for more then 30 years. She has also participated many group exhibitions including "The spirit of white" at Galerie Beyeler, Basel in 2004 and most recently "Néon, who's afraid of red, yellow and blue?" at la Maison Rouge, Paris in 2012. She has also been invited to create several major installations at world famous companies and public sites in cities like Basel, Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm. Gordillo today lives and work in Copenhagen, Denmark after spending many years living and working in Paris, France. Her work straddles the lines of design and sculpture with her Neon and Fluorescent Light installations reminiscent of the California Light & Space artists such as Larry Bell, Robert Irwin, Bruce Nauman, James Turrell as well as Dan Flavin. Cuthbert "CB" Bradley for Vanity Fair Magazine Otho 30 January 1902 Lithograph 21 x 37 cm CB's cartoon depicts John Otho Paget, noted beagler and author of 'Beagles and Beagling'. Cuthbert Bradley was also a sporting man - he famously authored 'Fox-Hunting from Shire to Shire with Many Noted Packs' and worked as a sporting journalist for The Field. As well as illustrating for Vanity Fair, he painted polo and foxhunting scenes, and other pictures of equestrian interest. The majority of his Vanity Fair cartoons are of hunting men.
