About the Item

DIEGO GIACOMETTI La Promenade des Amis, 1984 Ed. EA XXV Woven on loom, point and needle, by hand, all wool, cotton weft, for wall and floor use 235 x 175 x 3 cm I 92 1/2 x 68 7/8 x 1 1/8 in Woven signature, signed and numbered : D. Giacometti, DG, 86661, EA XXV, DG Certificate of authenticity issued by Diego Giacometti and Sedcome Fiercely loner and free, the genius of Diego Giacometti combined art with the useful, a plastic assurance with a tactile taste. A great dexterity attracted many desires and also strong support from Pierre Matisse as the furniture and objects of the artist adorned the walls of his homes. From Raoul Lévy to the fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, Giacometti enlivened houses of taste with his artistic and utilitarian creations. Diego Giacometti conceived two different tapestry designs in 1980s, Promenade des Amis and La Rencontre. Both were produced in editions of 100, plus artist proofs. The first thirty-five pieces from the edition were reserved for friends and devoted clients in the United States of America. La Promenade des Amis, runs in parallel with his sculptural work and reveals all the simplicity and purity of his inspiration. His solid, graceful and reassured aesthetic, is also echoed in this tapestry. The lines create a dimension of three levels, with human-like figures on each level and are reminiscent of his bronze tables, like Table berceau, première version, circa 1962. Like his tables, the tapestry is also a combination of figurative ornamentation and a play on linearity. The tree and figures, integrated into the composition, are recurrent images in Giacometti's oeuvre.
