Francesco Piranesi (Italian, 1758-1810) Topographical Map of Pompeii Originally executed 1785, modern reprint (likely 20th Century) Engraving Framed: 48 1/4 x 26 3/8 x 1 1/2 in. Francesco Piranesi's father, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, is recognized for his vast and magnificent legacy of archaeological and topographical etchings of Rome and southern Italy. In his last years he was captivated by the antiquities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which he often drew in a rather austere manner. Francesco inherited his father's trade as well as an interest in archeological sites as shown in the present Pompeii map. (Partial text taken from the Metropolitan Museum of Art)
