About the Item

In the ceramic work Joie de Vivre (Joy of Living), Picasso employs the simple decorative motifs characteristic of his ceramics, creating a striking monochromatic piece. Using simple relief lines, the artist depicts joyful figures dancing in a circle. The composition is harmoniously integrated with the form of the plate itself: the circle of dancers mirrors the shape of the object, creating a unity between image and form. The gentle lines of the hill in the background continue the dynamic flow of the composition, and although the figures are rendered schematically, they are full of movement and life. Stars and suns along the edge enhance its cheerful atmosphere, conveying a sense of timeless celebration. Created in 1956, this oval plate is made of white earthenware clay and produced in a limited edition of 100. The reverse is stamped with MADOURA PLEIN FEU and EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO. Picasso’s collaboration with Madoura began after he met Georges and Suzanne Ramié, owners of the Vallauris pottery studio, in 1946. Captivated by their workshop, he returned a year later with sketches and ideas, working regularly to produce unique ceramic pieces, including a series of plates. This work is fully documented and referenced in Ramié, Alain. Picasso Catalogue of the edited ceramic works 1947–1971. Vallauris: Madoura, 1988.
