Recognized for developing techniques for screen printing and painting with dye on fabric, other mediums include paint and ink on paper, metal, and wood. Their work sits at the junction of fine and applied arts with an influence of naive and folk art. Their collaborative dialogue has been continuous since the mid 1970’s. Fraas-Slade’s work has been selected for some of the defining exhibitions that have influenced the field of Art Quilts: “The New American Quilt”; originating at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York City in 1976, (along with Helen Bitar, Katherine Westphal, Radka Donnell, Anne Raymo) “The Art Quilt” at the Los Angeles Municipal Museum in 1986 (including Nancy Crow, Jean Hewes, Terrie Mangat, Jan Myers-Newbury, Theresa May, Pamela Studstill and Pauline Burbidge) and “Six Continents of Quilts: the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Art and Design,” NYC, touring internationally from 2002-2005. (the show included Jenny Hearn, Anne Marie Kenny, Gayle Fraas and Duncan Slade, Susan Denton, Sanae Hattori, Joan Schultze, Jenny Hearn and Mary Baxter). Books where work is featured include : Paintings of Maine by Carl Little, American Quilts: the Democratic Art 1780-2007 by Robert Shaw, The Art Quilt by Robert Shaw, Quilts Today by Robert Shaw, The Art Quilt by Penny McMorris and Michael Kile and Art to Wear by Julie Schafler Dale. Fraas and Slade continue to teach and lecture on their work. Workshops have been taught at conferences, art centers and colleges including: Haystack Mt. School of Crafts, ME, Arrowmont School of Crafts, TN and the School of Visual Arts, NYC. In 1989 and 2003, the artist team received Maine Visual Artist Fellowships and in 1995 a National Endowment for the Arts/ New England Foundation Visual Artist Fellowship. Collections include the Philadelphia Museum, Baltimore Museum, MD, Peabody Essex Museum, Museum of Art and Design, NYC., the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska and the corporate collections of Fidelity Investments, Nuveen, IL., Hilton Corporation and Elmira College. Public collections in Maine include Portland Public Library, Department of Transportation, Department of Marine Resources and the University of Maine/Orono. In 1989 and 2003 the artist team received Maine Visual Artist Fellowships and in 1995 a National Endowment for the Arts/ New England Foundation Visual Artist Fellowship. K.S. Radhakrishnan - Ramp Figure Bronze Sculpture H 13 x W 10 x D 6 inches K.S. Radhakrishnan working with Musui & Maiya, Musui potraits has a hand Rickshaw puller as is still prevalent in few parts of Bengal. The bronze figures are elfin, mischievous, airy, acrobatic, and archaic, delicately balancing on one hand or leg. He renders a sensuous quality to his works by deploying extraordinary body movements of his figures. Radhakrishnan is a distinctive and appealing presence on the modern Indian sculpture scene. He says: “For me bronze works best because it is strong, and brings out the character of my sculptures. Although it takes time, the process also becomes a part of my art form.” Style : K.S Radhakrishnan is one of the most notable among the new generation of sculptors. Like many of his contempories he is a figurative sculptor, but his preference for modelling and bronze casting sets him apart from the rest of them. Recharging age old sculptural processes with a new sensibility, thus is the singular challenge he brings to modern Indian sculpture. And this makes him a modernist - who approaches his work with discernible ambition and considerable aplomb while steering clear of brinkmanship. Radhakrishnan's works often drawn from the emotions and myths of the Hindu gods, such as Shiva, Kali and Radha. His sculptures are often larger than life-sized; placed in the outdoors, they evoke a superhuman atmosphere. Over the years, Radhakrishnan has experienced with alternate sculpting mediums, working in molten bronze, beeswax and Plaster of Paris.The physical process of working with the materials becomes a performance in itself. The sculpture is the product of a tactile engagement with his medium. With celebration of sensuality as one of its running themes, his works is at once both intimate and universal in its appeal. A personal commemorative sculpture, with a scale and presence that holds well in natural settings, his work has found permanent home in a number of public collections all over the world. Kartick Chandra Pyne - Laxmi's Consort 19 x 14.5 inches (unframed size) Watercolour on Thick Imported Paper, 2003 ( Unframed & Delivered ) Style : After graduating from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Calcutta in 1955 Pyne began to move away from the tenets of both classical Indian and Western art to respond to the beckoning of his own artistic impulses. Landscapes fascinated him initially. But along with the world of nature and flora emerged his own reconstructed images of fauna that often signified as metaphors of human passion and energy, and his paean to the elemental magic of women. This transition may have risen from his penchant for human psychology and observing the intricacies of human behavior. An inveterate introvert, the world of workaday reality does not attract Pyne as much as lower depths of psyche and the transformed world out of his fancy. Adherents of Surrealism thought that the horrors of World War I were the culmination of the Industrial Revolution and the result of the rational mind. Consequently, however, irrational thought and dream-states were viewed as the natural antidote to those social problems. The Surrealist diagnosis of the ‘problem’ of the realism and capitalist civilisation is a restrictive overlay of false rationality, including social and academic convention, on the free functioning of the instinctual urges of the human mind. The Surrealist ethos also connected itself with the theories of Sigmund Freud who asserted that unconscious thoughts do motivate human behaviour while advocating free association and dream analysis to reveal subterranean thoughts. In the case of Pyne too, his artistic vision does not adhere to logic because he does not see with his eyes but rather through his subconscious mind -- in an act of surrender to the liberty of his dreamy vision -- with little control over the wanton caprice of his depictions.
