About the Item

Stéphane COUTURIER (*1957, France) Angers – Le Chant de l'Apocalypse #02, 2022 Tapestry 290 x 218 cm (114 1/8 x 85 7/8 in.) Edition of 5; Ed. no. 1/5 Born in 1957 in Neuilly sur Seine, Stéphane Couturier currently lives and works in Paris. In 1994, Stéphane Couturier showed his first works in a series called 'Urban Archaeology', viewing the city as a living organism with multiple aspects. He photographed it deliberately avoiding anything that suggested poetry, nostalgia or strangeness. From 1999 on, Stéphane Couturier was increasingly drawn to suburbs and began to focus on a different type of landscape: on the one hand, by tackling housing blocks and high-rises in his 'Monuments' series; on the other, by photographing mushrooming housing developments. These generic cities soon became his favorite subject. – Tapisserie '’Le Chant de l'Apocalypse' combines the medium of photography with the medium of textiles to create a contemporary tapestry. The beginning of this research was made possible by an invitation from the Musées d'Angers in 2020. There I studied the two masterpieces of tapestry, the 14th century 'tenture de l'Apocalypse' and the 20th century 'Chant du Monde' by Jean Lurçat. Since the latter gave up painting to devote himself to tapestry art after discovering the 'tenture de l'Apocalypse', I wanted to physically bring these two closely related works together. A series of photographs based on the fusion process I have been practicing since 2005 were presented in 2020 in the form of photographic prints, but very quickly the idea of making a tapestry in the continuity of the original medium seemed essential.' – Stéphane Couturier – Art, Contemporary, Colour, Architecture, Tapestry, Geometry, Graphics, Structured, Pattern, Angers
