Signed lower left "Kvapil" Charles Kvapil was born in Czechoslovakia on November 1, 1884, and died in Paris in 1957. He takes courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His first works are exhibited in 1908, at the Salon of Antwerp. In 1911, he exhibits in Munich; his works show a definite cubist influence in a well-tempered, organization and simplification bill. Arrived at a young age in Paris, he sets up his studio in Montmartre in the Hamlet of Artists, between Lepic Street and No. 11 Junot Avenue near those of Utrillo and Valadon; it is there that he will die. In 1912, he exhibits at the Salon des Independants. In 1914, he presents his works again in Belgium at the Brussels Triennal. After the war, he lives a very poor life but, with an optimistic temperament, he hopes to break through; he has to work to survive and he paints especially in the evening, especially during his first years in Paris. It is at the Salon des Independants in 1920 that Kvapil is revealed to the Parisian public. He exhibits six paintings: "My campaign", "portrait of woman", "Houseboat", "Poplars", "Bras St. Jean (landscape)" and "Still Life". He is domiciled at 233, rue d'Alésia in Montparnasse." "In the wake of the legendary figures of Montparnasse, in their shadow, and by them held at a relative discretion (the behavior of artists entering many into the brilliance of their career and the exclusive attachment to their production, without extension" social " " condemning them to darkness), is Charles Kvapil. He frequents the Parnassus café [...] and is exhibited there in a small group organized by A. Clergé, "the Company of professional painters and sculptors", which manifests itself in 1921. Subsequently, he participates in the Salon d'Automne; to that of 1941, he presents "Phlox", and in 1944 "At the window". In 1951, at the same Salon, he exhibites "Plaisir d'été" and "Le Goûter". He exhibits during his lifetime in Paris, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Italy, Stockholm, London and New York. He is now represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the museums of Le Havre, Libourne, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Amsterdam and Tunis. Charles Kvapil is known mainly as a painter of characters, especially for his representations of naked women for which his friend Ginette often served as a model; he painted models in the studio, sometimes in front of his window with the Montmartre hill in the background; often bathers or female nudes placed in groups of characters, in the manner of Courbet and the Impressionists at their beginning. He is also creator of many portraits; but he did not disdain either the still lifes, especially the bouquets of flowers, or the landscapes, which form an important part of his work. He painted many regions, including Corrèze, where he "knew how to grasp the character of the country that is not his, with his usual mastery" (SSHA Bulletin Corrèze), the Mediterranean coast, Corsica, where he stays regularly in the 1920s and 1930s; in Paris he participated in exhibitions of painters of Corsica in 1925 and 1933. In 1939, at a new exhibition of Art Corse, at the Gallery The Team, still in Paris, he presented two paintings titled "Costa Brugiata, Cap Corsica "and" View of Rogliano ". He is also the creator of "On the Island" (1923), "Querciolo, Rogliano" (1923), "Corsican Woman" (1924), "Landscape of Corsica" (1933) (information Cronica di a Corsica). Charles Kvapil was influenced by fauvism and a very temperate cubism; Paul Cézanne and to a certain extent Matisse (as a colorist), also marked his style. His palette is rich in cobalt blue and warm colors. His technique is voluntary and powerful. His works in oil are often of modest size, sometimes painted on panels, or on cardboard. He also practiced with great skill the technique of pastel. P. Béran, in a study he has dedicated to him, praises the richness of his material and all that his art owes to the joy of living. Her work is in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and other museums. Stuart, a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild who later became an accomplished painter and fine printer, died Sunday night at her West Los Angeles home, said her daughter, writer Sylvia Thompson. Stuart had been diagnosed with lung cancer five years ago. “She also was a breast cancer survivor,” Thompson said, “but she just paid no attention to illness. Frank Tenney Johnson traveled throughout the Colorado Rockies sketching and painting western landscapes and native American and cowboy figurative art. Presented in black painted wood frame Mat size: 14"H x 11"W Paper size: 9"H x 6"W Image size (visible with mat): 8"H x 5.25"W Frank Tenney Johnson was born in Coucil Bluffs, Iowa, in 1874 not far from the Overland Trail. During his childhood, he saw the steady stream of people heading west in all forms of horse-drawn conveyance. This early exposure to the American West was critical in leading Johnson towards the Western landscape as an inspiration for his work. The resulting body of work is a moody and romantic depiction of a long-gone America, rendered in a style that has become practically a genre all its own. At the age of ten, Johnson moved from Iowa to Milwaukee, WI. There, he took an apprenticeship with F.W. Heinie, a prominent panoramic painter. After a year with Heinie, Johnson apprenticed for Richard Lorenz, a painter and former Texas Ranger who specialized in depictions of horses and western scenes. It was probably during his time with Lorenz that Johnson decided to focus on western subjects himself. He also started illustrating for regional papers and publications, in order to save money for further training. Further training, as with many of the artists who populated New Mexico in the early twentieth century, took place at the Art Students League in New York, where Robert Henri, William Merritt Chase, John Twachtman, Kenneth Hayes Miller and F. Louis Mora were in the process of teaching perhaps the last great batch of pre-modernists. Though highly stimulated by the training, Johnson was only able to stay for five months, after which he returned to Milwaukee to work and save money in an effort to return to New York. He was able to do so after a time and, upon returning, established an important professional relationship with Emerson Hough, the editor of "Field & Stream" magazine. At Hough's urging (and on Hough's dime), Johnson traveled to Hayden, Colorado, where he tagged along with a group of cowpunchers in order to sketch their way of life. Though primarily an artist, Johnson also wrote accounts of his time in Colorado for "Field & Stream." After Colorado came Cheyenne, Wyoming, where Johnson attended a "Frontier Days" celebration; after Wyoming, Johnson traveled to New Mexico, where he observed the Navajos and their threatened way of life. This trip changed Johnson from an academic artist with an appreciation for the west to a truly western artist. Of particular interest to him, in stark contrast to other western artists of the time like Frederic Remington and C.M. Russell, were the more quotidian scenes of the West. Specifically, Johnson focused upon scenes featuring horses, especially at night. Johnson painted a great number of pieces that featured horses tied up outside of saloons, inns or trading posts for the night, the moonlit night punctuated by the warm glow from the lamps inside. In this, he can be considered a pioneer, as his night pieces still serve as the archetype for such work in western art. Johnson became quite successful through his work for "Field & Stream." He was chosen to illustrate books by the prominent writer Zane Grey, and his gallery shows sold briskly. In fact, one particular show, at the Grand Central Art Galleries at the Biltmore Hotel in New York, sold out opening night. In fact, one man had bought out the entire show: Amon Carter. Having achieved financial security and comfort, Johnson followed his good friend Clyde Forsythe to Alhambra, CA, where the two established residency and shared a studio. California treated Johnson well. He and Forsythe founded the gallery at the Los Angeles Biltmore...

This charming pastel painting on paper was designed by Pio Santini (1908-1986) and named nude with lace. The signature, Santini, can be found in the bottom left corner of the artwork. The artwork depicts a lovely romantic composition with a nude young lady kneeling and holding a piece of white lace. The artist used a Flamboyant magenta-red drape background. The painting remains in its original frame, which features delicately carved wood, a gesso finish, an off-white wood liner, and glass protection. The piece is in good condition but has a dark stain and some small chips on the edges of the original wood frame. Artist Biography: Pio Santini (1908-1986) Pio Santini was born on April 17, 1908, close to Rome, in Tivoli, Italy. He had a keen and early taste in art, starting with painting and drawing. From his childhood drawings, as early as 5 or 6 years old, he was gifted and had a technique above the average. As early as 1933, Pio Santini moved to Paris, in the Montparnasse district, also known as The Artists Area, where he settled in his first Parisian studio. He is recognized as a member of the Academy of Paris, a significant art movement in the first half of the 20th century, alongside Amedeo Modigliani and other Italian artists. While attending the classes of the Estienne School for further training in plastic art, Pio Santini started to attract attention in various Parisian Salons (particularly the Winter Salon, the Independents Salon, and the French Artists Salon.) According to the newspapers of his time, he gained a position in the Parisian painting community. The Second World War, which pitted his country of birth against his adopted nation, created conflicting emotions in him. During this time, the concept of a united and reconciled Europe took root in his mind. In a way, he played a part in resuming cultural exchanges between France and Italy by founding the association The Romans in Paris after the war and especially by creating and animating the Villa D’Este's Prize for about ten years. This award gives a month's stay at the Villa in Tivoli to a French writer or artist each year. Later, in the same way, the Montparnasse Prize would reward Italian artists in Paris. He worked as an art illustrator for editions and press while focusing on painting, and he left us rich but underappreciated work from this period. In the early 1960s, Pio Santini decided, imperiously and bravely, to live on his painting. A member of the Society of Independent Artists since 1934, he then actively participated in numerous collective exhibitions in France and abroad. He regularly exhibited in Parisian Salons, most of which he was a member: the Independents Salon, the Autumn Salon, the Winter Salon, the National Salon of the Fine Arts, and the Comparison Salon. He frequently received awards for participating in the esteemed Salon des Artistes Français. Winning the Ernest Marché Prize in 1974, a gold medal in 1971, and The Great Price of the Salon in 1970 and 1974. Pio Santini lived his last years in his house in Garches, near Paris. He worked there until the last moment and died of illness at the age of 78. Keeping himself a part of the avant-garde of contemporary art, Pio Santini developed a personal work of formal coherence very steadily. He is a two-time artist, one of the beginnings of his career in the Thirties and the other one, his rebirth, the Sixties, when the artist could again devote himself to painting. Santini's artistic development was severely impacted by the Second World War.
