A substantial, Modernist portrait of the fashion designer, Lieselotte Friedländer, shown seated in a chrome-steel Bauhaus chair with a view beyond to a sunlit, woodland grove.
Georg Rössner first studied in Berlin and, later, in Paris with Lovis Corinth. Rössner was a member of both the Berlin and Munich Sezession committees and, in 1920, was appointed professor at Berlin’s Staatliche Kunstschule. Over the course of a long career, Rössner exhibited internationally with success including at the 1929 Paris Exhibition des Peintres-Graveurs Allemands. His work is held in prominent private and public collections including the permanent collection of the National Gallery in Berlin.

An imposing view of a snowy landscape most probably the artist's native Wisconsin. Jonas has captured the grandeur of the scene with the contrast between the thick lush snow and the rich colours of the foliage and leaves on the trees. His impasto technique is very characteristic of the American Impressionists as is the subject and sense of scale. A really beautiful painting which because of its scale would be a statement piece in any room.
LeRoy Jonas was born in the town of Texas, Marathon County, Wisconsin, on April 18, 1897, son of Johann F. and Marie (Borchardt) Jonas. He was educated in Wausau public schools and attended the Chicago Art Institute, where he studied under John Norton, noted for his murals, Leopold Seifert, noted for his portraits, and William Wilmovsky, a landscape artist. He worked as a commercial artist and Conservator of Fine Arts there. Artist, teacher and costume designer, Sanzo Wada worked during a turbulent time in avant-garde Japanese art and cinema. A multi-talented artist who gained early fame as a Western-style oil painter, his career spanned the late Meiji-era through the mid-twentieth century. In addition to numerous prizes and medals for his painting, he received the 1955 Academy Award for costume design for his work in the movie Gates of Hell. He also received awards for his pioneering work on color theory, which he researched and published in the 1920s and is still in use today.
Sanzo Wada graduated from the Western-style painting division of Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Studied in Europe 1907-1915; traveled to India and Burma. He was appointed a member of the Imperial Arts Academy in 1927 and taught at Tokyo School of Fine Arts from 1927.
