About the Item

Albert Deman (15 January 1929 – 22 December 1996) was a French painter and sculptor known for his diverse body of work and evolving artistic styles throughout the mid-20th century. Born in Bousbecque, in the Nord department of France, Deman demonstrated artistic talent from a young age. In 1945, he began studying sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille, followed by further studies in Nantes in 1946. He settled in Vendée, where he started exhibiting his work in 1946 at the New Salon of La Roche-sur-Yon and inaugurated the René Robin Gallery as its first exhibitor. In the 1950s, Deman's work was influenced by the expressive style and motifs of Jean Carzou, evident in his depictions of cities like Bruges and La Rochelle. During the 1960s and 1970s, his style became more restrained, while the 1980s saw a return to vibrant colors and abstract forms, particularly during his Maghreb period. He participated in the "Salon des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps" in Paris from 1957 to 1960, showcasing his work alongside other notable artists. Albert Deman passed away in Angles, Vendée, in 1996. His former residence in La Rochelle was transformed into an artist residency, inaugurated in 2011, to honor his contribution to the arts. Several streets in France have been named after him, reflecting his lasting impact on French cultural heritage.
