Alfredo Aya
Silencio - Minimalist Abstract Painting, Muted Color Palette Art, Vertical

2021

About the Item

Alfredo Aya’s Silencio is a masterful exploration of stillness and contemplation, executed with a refined interplay of abstraction and color. The painting’s vertical composition draws the eye to a narrow, luminous strip of greens, blues, and soft yellows, which emerges as a vibrant passage against the surrounding expanse of deep, atmospheric gray. This contrast creates a meditative focal point, where light and form seem suspended in time, evoking a quiet, almost spiritual resonance. The simplicity of Silencio is deceptive—Aya’s intricate layering of translucent hues adds depth and dimension to the central element, reminiscent of a hidden landscape or a sliver of light breaking through shadow. This work reflects a profound minimalism akin to Mark Rothko’s emotive color fields or the spatial restraint of Agnes Martin’s compositions. However, Aya brings his unique sensibility to the piece by introducing a poetic balance between density and lightness, stillness and motion. Silencio speaks to those who value abstraction with emotional depth. Its restrained palette and refined composition make it an ideal addition to contemporary interiors, offering a moment of serenity and introspection. Aya’s ability to transform simplicity into a richly layered narrative sets this work apart, making it particularly appealing to collectors who seek art that embodies elegance, quiet power, and timeless sophistication. Aya was born in Paris in 1954 and after studying in Paris and Switzerland he moved to Colombia in his late teens. He lives and works in Bogota'. His paintings navigate the delicate boundary between post-impressionism and abstraction. His palette is vivid and pastel-like, informed by the tropical landscapes and seashores of his beloved Colombia. Aya was born in Paris, where he lived until his early twenties, beginning his painting carrier immersed in the artistic work of modern French masters. His most figurative paintings share similarities to Post-Impressionist artists like Paul Gaugin, especially in the choice of colors and a synthetist style. In his most abstract paintings, Aya combines geometric and biomorphic shapes defined by soft pastel colors, reminiscent of the spatial composition of surrealist South American painter Roberto Matta and the dreamy creations of French Post-Impressionist artist Emile Bernard. Aya writes, “Form and movement emerge from color in the same way dance is natural to music.”
