About the Item
Translucent layers of periwinkle, blue and steel-grey compose the background of this rich and energetic painting. Dragged horizontally across the canvas are thick bands of black, white, orange, red, yellow and green acrylic paint. Appropriating a method of scraping akin to printmaking, and using various tools such as aluminum moulding, the artist repeatedly applies these colourful layers of paint and gel-medium to the already glazed canvas surface. The result is a highly complex and texturized piece, whose left-to-right movement mimics the directional reading of a musical score.
Alice Teichert grew up in Europe, lived and painted in New York for many years before moving to Canada. Her work has been the subject of two recent public museum retrospectives, and is regularly exhibited in Europe, the US and Canada.
Her work has been written about extensively by academics and art critics, because of the way in which her paintings have developed their own textual style of visual poetry. On many occasions they have been played as music scores by both classical and jazz musicians. Most recently Lola Tostevin writes about Teichert's work in At the Risk of Sounding. A book on Teichert's work will be published in Germany in 2017.

(b.1959, Paris, FR) Multidisciplinary artist Alice Teichert is known for her use of bold colours and layered transparencies interspersed with script like line drawings. Teichert studied music, philosophy and visual arts in Belgium and France. Since 1989, she has built an international career with over 30 solo exhibitions in Germany, France, NY, Canada, Switzerland and Australia. Teichert’s paintings are held in many private, corporate and public collections including the MacLaren Art Centre, Global Affairs Canada, and the Musée de la Ville de Valence, France. An English-German edition of a monograph by Dagmar Täube, titled In)Formation - On the Philosophy and Art of Alice Teichert has recently been published by Hirmer Publishers, Münich, Germany
