About the Item
Abstract geometric futuristic cityscape in acrylic on canvas by Senegalese artist Amadou Cissé Dia. Signed bottom left.
An arresting cityscape in bright colours. Geometric patterns since early Islamic times to connect spirituality with science. This is exactly what Cisse Dia, as a utopian artist, does here in creating wonderful futuristic cities with the ultimate goal of making people's lives happier. His paintings soar and lift the heart. The bringing together of humanity and cities finds resonance in the works of Fernand Leger who explored in geometric abstraction the clashing of industry and man. Two sides of the same coin.
Born in 1960 in Baghagha, Senegal. Self-taught, Amadou Cissé arrived in France at the age of 18. He exercised various trades there while practising drawing. From 2001, he took on duties as a security officer which allowed him another view on the world. He began drawing urban skylines as seen from his viewpoint on the tops of buildings. His nocturnal vigils inspired him to create clever kaleidoscopic works, increasingly precise largescale cityscapes using pencil, ballpoint pen and felt-tip pen. These works are highly imaginative with a skillful play on perspective.
This utopian artist/urban planner imagines architectural environments with coloured walls in order to bring joy and cheerfulness to the inhabitants. He populates its cities with buildings with multiple windows, skyscrapers along which slide highways and river ports. Our gaze must go beyond this abundance and penetrate the network of streets in order to understand the principles of urban organization that govern the work of the artist. A great traveller, his views of New York, Paris, Moscow, Cairo, London are all tributes to modern life that he has exhibited regularly since 2010.

Large Geometric Abstract. 'Traces No.9 Pour une Archéologie du Présent.'
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large 1970s abstract geometric acrylic and oil on plywood panel signed Rivel and dated 1977 to the bottom left. The painting is titled to the rear of the panel.
Numbers of colour fields in muted shades jostle against one another. It is the shapes and the space between them which give energy to the painting whilst the colour palette restrains.
The painting is highly textured as the artist has applied the paint thickly and energetically with both palette knife and large brushstrokes. At times layers of paint reveal underlying colours.
This painting fits perfectly into the abstract genre with its focus on its formal qualities over and above its subject matter. Furthermore the artist experiments with reconstructing shapes and rejecting three dimensional perspective. A fine example of non objective art...

'Style Moderne', Mid-Century Abstract Geometric, Oil on Canvas.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 20th century modern abstract oil on canvas attributed to French artist Norbert Palmade. The painting is not signed but was bought from his atelier and with a collection of his paintings and is therefore attributed to him.
A highly colourful, energetic and impactful painting. The paint is very thickly applied in parts and is therefore also somewhat sculptural as a piece of art. Sand has been added to the paint to give the image great texture. A joyful painting to brighten any room.
Norbert Palmade spent much of his early years living in Morocco. He arrived there in 1930 at the age of two and stayed until 1947 when he returned home to France.
He finished his schooling in Hyères in the south of France, then travelled up to Paris to study architecture. There aged 25 he set up a public works business and worked as an architect right up until his retirement in 1991.
Throughout this journey Palmade never stopped painting, at first in watercolours. He had always drawn, then moved on to gouache, oil and finally in the last twenty years, acrylic. The latter suited his rapid handling of paint well.
He says of himself that he had no particular speciality. He would paint whatever gave him pleasure, although a large part of his heart belonged to those early years in Morocco and he painted many a canvas with subjects from this country.
He took part in exhibitions in a number of towns near the south coast of France including, Sanary, Le Pradet and Ollioules. He was also the guest of honour at the Academy of the Var.
Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric forms sometimes, though not always, placed in non-illusionistic space and combined into non-objective (non-representational) compositions. Although the genre was popularized by avant-garde artists in the early twentieth century, similar motifs have been used in art since ancient times. Sonia and Robert Delauney...
