About the Item
Whether it is from nature or from other sources he comes across in his daily life, Andy Moses is always highly attuned to his environment for inspiration. Swirling bands of serpentine color move in whirling striations on the circular canvases or “tondo’s,” lend themselves to a more abstracted visual, where the horizontal, concave panels give impressions of horizons and/or ocean-scapes. In the large circular work Geodesy 1239, the mother-of-pearl palette was inspired by a black lacquer tray inlaid with the iridescent mollusk shells from the Ryukyu Islands. Moses saw Circular Tray with Two Dragons Chasing a Flaming Pearl (1700-1800) in , The Five Directions: Lacquer Through East Asia at Los Angeles County Art Museum. Drawing from the tray’s motif, formal shapes, lines and palette, Moses abstracted the figuration depicted.
