About the Item
Blurring the line between abstraction and a new kind of pictorialism, Moses utilizes techniques that facilitate his almost obsessive study of the alchemical properties of paint. The paintings that emerge articulate the abstract nature of perception, reaching beyond the material and tapping into the visceral.
Andy Moses mines the history of Light & Space and Finish Fetish movements to provide and infiltrate metaphors for a back-and-forth relationship with figuration and abstraction through his investigations into materiality and perception. Poetically oscillating betwixt and between atmospheric sky-spaces, landscape and process, they encompass to illustrate a biography particular to his lens and authorship. To do so, he has invented his own medium - an animation of paint poured to float across surface with varying viscosities and fossilizing them, arresting pigments into rhythmic forms and catalyzing them into pristine conclusion. Gesture is evident in the undulations of luminous color which course their way through the paintings in emulsions which vacillate between acute lineation and soft washes of diffused pigment.
