Annabelle Shelton
Regent Bicycle - original abstract impressionism painting - contemporary art

2024

About the Item

"Regent Bicycle" by Annabelle Shelton captures the movement and rhythm of urban life through an abstract impressionist lens, blending meticulous detail with a sense of airy freedom. Executed in watercolour on aluminium and finished with a sprayed lacquer, this artwork offers a snapshot of daily life in Regent’s Park, where figures and bicycles are scattered across an expansive white space. The figures appear to be in motion, walking or riding, while the minimalist background evokes both emptiness and the fullness of a city’s bustle. Shelton’s use of soft watercolours creates a lightness that contrasts with the solidity of the aluminium surface, grounding the piece with a modern, sleek feel. The carefully dispersed figures invite the viewer to explore the interaction between individuals and the space they occupy, creating a sense of connectedness amidst urban isolation. The deliberate space between each figure hints at the nature of city life—filled with people yet emotionally distant. This delicate balance of energy and emptiness is key to Shelton’s unique abstract impressionist style. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, "Regent Bicycle" is available for acquisition at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea and online, offering a striking reflection of modern urban life captured in watercolour on aluminium. Artist biography: Annabelle Shelton (b. London) is a British artist who holds an MA in Fine Art from Birmingham City University (2001). She is currently based in Milton Keynes, working out of a historic Victorian school building known as ‘Workspace’. Shelton’s paintings, crafted on aluminium using watercolour and graphite, explore the interaction of people in urban and beach environments. The spaces themselves are often negated, leaving stark white backgrounds that reveal intricate patterns of human movement. In 2010, Shelton was a resident artist at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre in Wales, where she participated in the main gallery exhibition, Five. That same year, she was selected for the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize. In 2011, she held a solo exhibition at Chapter in Cardiff. Shelton has contributed critical reviews for the a-n Artists Information Company and has exhibited her work with galleries such as Jill George Gallery, Rebecca Hossack Gallery, Rarity Gallery (Greece), and Caudwell Snyder (San Francisco). In 2013, she was awarded 2nd prize in the Neo for her piece Black Holes at Weymouth. Her work was also featured in the Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition and the Discerning Eye at the Mall Galleries, London, in 2015. Shelton’s paintings have been showcased at numerous national and international art fairs, and are held in both private and public collections worldwide. Explore the captivating figurative beach scenes by Annabelle Shelton, thoughtfully curated at Signet Contemporary Art. Available for purchase both in our London gallery and online, these exceptional works showcase Shelton's extraordinary talent and unique artistic vision. Each piece is a testament to her ability to capture the flow of human movement in urban and beach settings, creating a visual experience that is both enchanting and profound. “Inspired by the Japanese concept of "MA" (negative space), I explore the void between things, focusing on how people occupy space. My work delves into psychogeography, examining urban environments and their impact on human behavior. By removing infrastructure, nature, and landscapes from my paintings, I leave only figures, lines, and clusters of people in familiar places like cities and beaches. The empty white space reveals where crowds gather and how they interact, their clothing and objects hinting at the unseen environment. My process begins with photography, capturing these scenes to later transform into paintings that emphasize the choreography of urban life. From street crossings to beach gatherings, I study the ways people navigate and interact with spaces constantly shaped by modern conditions and technology. The beach, like the city, has its own dynamics—shaped by tides, entertainment, and privatization. The beachgoers, seated in clusters, seem like an audience facing the sea, with distances between groups forming invisible borders. My work examines these human behaviors, providing insight into how we experience and shape the spaces around us.”- Annabelle Shelton
