About

Barbara Ellis is a non-objective abstract painter who lives and works in the Charlotte, NC Metro area. A native of New York City, her colorful paintings respond to dreams and musings, reflect the Spiritual, the Socio-political, and memory. Surprising forms and movement emanate from her work as she uses the abstract expressionist process to channel emotional states into visual form. Ellis’ artwork has been shown throughout NC – and during most of 2020, was highlighted in the “NC Women Abstract Painters” show at Greenhill Center for NC Art in Greensboro. In her own words, "My quest for Balance has always been innate. Baked in. It shows up in many facets of my life. And so, when I was introduced to non-objective abstract artmaking, I realized that I had found my creative sweet spot. Inspiration is borne out of dreams, musings, and externals that are worthy of visual expression. While building an abstract work, it is natural for chaos to develop as I express the Idea supporting my marks. Eventually, my job becomes turning randomness into a semblance of order. The act of doing of the work facilitates the journey to find its end. A comfortable composition emerges; Balance - as it occurs to me. The outcome, therefore, reflects the experience." Within her series In Pursuit of Quiet, Barbara Ellis explores the process and fruition of finding peace and quiet. To be free from noise, both literally and figuratively, is the journey Ellis leads us on, and in her case, we are met with three different levels of discovery. In this final piece, In Pursuit of Quiet 3, Ellis expresses peace and resolve: airy blues and subdued yellows and tans are mellow and effortless. Upon viewing this piece, spirits are immediately lulled and we can sink into the often intangible moment that allows us to inhale and exhale slowly, relax our senses and embrace quiet. Ellis earned her B.A. in Commercial Art from The City College of New York (CUNY); she has studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology (NY, NY), The School of Visual Arts (NY, NY), Central Piedmont Community College (Charlotte, NC) and independently with artists Louise Farley, Lee Baumgarten, Walter Stanford, and Steve Aimone. Ellis’ work has been exhibited across North and South Carolina. She is also one of the North Carolina-based artists featured in The Art of The State: Creating, Collecting and Celebrating the Visual Arts in North Carolina.
