1962

About the Item

"Signals, Orange/Black" is an original oil on masonite painting by Bernard Arnest (1917-1986), created in 1962. This striking piece is signed by Arnest in the lower center and titled on the reverse. The painting is framed in its original artist frame, measuring 36 ½ x 27 ½ inches, with the image size at 36 x 27 inches. It features a dynamic abstract geometric composition in bold colors including orange, black, red, yellow, and green, showcasing Arnest's signature style. This artwork is part of Arnest's celebrated "Signals Series" and was featured in his solo exhibition at Kraushaar Galleries in October 1962, marking an important moment in his career. About the Artist: Bernard Arnest, a Denver native, studied under influential instructors such as Helen Perry at East High School, who recognized and nurtured Colorado's emerging artistic talent. Arnest also benefited from additional instruction at the Kirkland School of Art and the School of Fine Art and Design, both led by renowned Colorado artist Frank Mechau. After high school, Arnest further honed his skills at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, where he studied under Boardman Robinson and Henry Varnum Poor. In 1940, Arnest received the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in painting, which he used to explore San Francisco's vibrant art scene. That same year, the San Francisco Museum of Art hosted his first solo exhibition, setting the stage for a prolific career. Arnest's works were later shown at notable venues such as the Whitney Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, National Academy of Design, Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Throughout his career, Arnest maintained a close association with Kraushaar Galleries in New York, which represented many iconic artists, and he continued to show his work there until his passing in 1986. From 1957 to 1982, Arnest served as a professor and chair of the art department at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, where he influenced generations of artists. Arnest's legacy is defined by his dedication to abstract art and his powerful use of color and geometry, as seen in the work "Signals, Orange/Black," a remarkable example of mid-century modern abstraction.
