About the Item

Zerrouki Boukhari is an Algerian painter and scenographer who wears many hats. Born in Mostaganem, he was a trainee at the School of Dramatic Art in Sidi Fredj from 1964 to 1968, when he became an assistant stage designer at the Algerian National Theatre and an assistant in plastic arts at the National School of Dramatic Art in Bordj El Kiffan. Between 1964 and 1970, after studying at the National School of Architecture and Fine Arts in Algiers, Zerrouki became a member of the Group of 35 painters. In 1973, on the fringes of a seminar led by the great playwright Abdelkader Alloula, he produced a collective fresco with the most important contemporary Algerian artists, including Mohammed Khadda, co-founder of the National Union of Plastic Arts in 1964, Denis Martinez and Mohamed Benbaghdad, co-founders and initiators of the Aouchem (tattoo) movement in 1967. As a set designer for the Oran theatre and Algerian television, he worked with the greatest names in theatre and designed the sets and costumes for some forty plays, including those by Abdelkader Alloula (Homk Salim, Lithem, Ledjouad, Hafila Tassir), M'Hamed Benguettaf (Arrêt fixe), Ziani Chérif Ayad (Les Martyrs reviennent cette semaine), Abdelkrim Barchid (Le Dernier conteur) and Kateb Yacine. As a theatre designer, Zerrouki has not resigned himself to seeing his work disappear. As an attentive observer of the evolution of the society in which he lived, he continued to feed on the plots that unfolded on stage in order to inscribe his pictorial production process in a perpetual reading through painting. Between the beginning of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1990s, he held several exhibitions in Algiers and Oran, but also abroad. He obtains in 1986, the First Great Price of the Festival of the professional theatre of Algiers. The collectors of the region of Ménart are very fond of the works of Zerrouki Boukhari. The Hermitage Museum in The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg has acquired one of his works, "October Fields and May Plain". Today, the artist lives in France and devotes himself exclusively to painting. His vision of contemporary art has evolved considerably, which is reflected in these new works. The distance from his native country has given him a vision and an approach to a singular world. This distance has become a fertile cultural crossroads and a source of creation that is undoubtedly broader, taking an interest in the fate of all humanity.

Large Geometric Abstract. 'Traces No.9 Pour une Archéologie du Présent.'
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large 1970s abstract geometric acrylic and oil on plywood panel signed Rivel and dated 1977 to the bottom left. The painting is titled to the rear of the panel. Numbers of colour fields in muted shades jostle against one another. It is the shapes and the space between them which give energy to the painting whilst the colour palette restrains. The painting is highly textured as the artist has applied the paint thickly and energetically with both palette knife and large brushstrokes. At times layers of paint reveal underlying colours. This painting fits perfectly into the abstract genre with its focus on its formal qualities over and above its subject matter. Furthermore the artist experiments with reconstructing shapes and rejecting three dimensional perspective. A fine example of non objective art...

Abstract Composition, oil painting by Pierre Coquet
Located in Montfort l’Amaury, FR
Pierre Coquet – Abstract Composition Reference number A85 Framed with a natural oak floated frame 55 x 70 cm frame included (50 x 65 cm without frame) This work is painted with oil on a paper that is mounted on a board and placed in a made to measure wood strectcher. Stamp of the signature in the bottom right Pierre was very sensitive to abstract paintings. He did a lot of abstract works melting colors and shapes in different atmosphere and style. Nevertheless he could come back to figuration and again to abstraction with no precise period of time. Abstract paintings by Pierre Coquet represent a large part of his production. The constant search for balance between shapes and colors as well as his passion for Nicolas de Staël, André Lanskoy, Alfred Mannessier… takes him on different paths from what we know of him. His way of painting is strong and thoughtful, the lines stretch out and the harmonious touches, applied with sobriety, reveal a great sense of color. Provenance : Workshop of the artist (stamped and numbered on the back) Pierre Coquet (1926-2021) is a French painter who was born in Limas near Lyon, France. He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon in 1942 and followed the teaching of Antoine Chartres, Henri Vielly and René Chancrin. He won a prize in 1945 and joined a movement that wanted to be outside of any school whose name ends with “ism”, (like impressionism, cubism…) between figuration and the renaissance of Abstract Art, bringing together young generations under thirty and eager not to submit to any technique. The “Sanzism” (literally without « ism ») will bring together, among others, painters: James Bansac, Roger Bravard, André Chaix, Jean Mélinand, Paul Clair, André Cottavoz, Pierre Doye, Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus, André Lauran...
