Karl Zerbe (1903-1972) A mixed-media Painting collage of mod neon colored leaves on canvas with parchment backing. Hand signed "Zerbe" bottom left and dated bottom right 1965-65. Dimensions: Collage: 36 in tall x 24 in wide. Frame: 40 in tall x 28 in wide. Karl Zerbe (1903 – 1972) was a German-born American realist painter and educator. Karl Zerbe was born on September 16, 1903 in Berlin, Germany. The family lived in Paris, France from 1904–1914, where his father was an executive in an electrical supply concern. In 1914 they moved to Frankfurt, Germany where they lived until 1920. Karl Zerbe studied chemistry in 1920 at the Technische Hochschule in Friedberg, Germany. From 1921 until 1923 he lived in Munich, where he studied painting at the Debschitz School, mainly under Josef Eberz. From 1924 until 1926 Karl Zerbe worked and traveled in Italy on a fellowship from the City of Munich. In 1932 his oil painting titled, ‘’Herbstgarten’’ (autumnal garden), of 1929, was acquired by the National-Gallery, Berlin; in 1937, the painting was destroyed by the Nazis as "Degenerate art." Entartete Kunst was what they deemed all the Avant Garde, Modernism Movements. In the visual arts, sucf innovations as Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Dada, Bauhaus, Post Impressionism were disdained. Artists such as Käthe Kollwitz, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Max Beckmann, Max Ernst, Oskar Kokoschka, El Lissitzky, Franz and Marc Chagall were among those who despite having made significant contributions to the German modernist movement were banned even if they were not necessarily Jewish. From 1937 until 1955, Karl Zerbe was the head of the Department of Painting, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1939 Karl Zerbe became a U.S. citizen and the same year for the first time he used encaustic. He joined the faculty in the Department of Art and Art History at Florida State University in 1955, where he taught until his death. He was grouped together with the Boston artists Kahlil Gibran (bronze sculpture), Jack Levine and Hyman Bloom as a key member of the Boston Expressionist school of painting, and through his teaching influenced a generation of painters,[including, among others, David Aronson, Bernard Chaet, Reed Kay, Arthur Polonsky, Jack Kramer, Barbara Swan, Andrew Kooistra, and Lois Tarlow. Born in Paris in 1946 and raised in the heart of an idyllic French countryside near the Loire Valley, Jacques Lamy began painting at a very early age. Jacques completed his formal artistic training at the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieur des Arts Decoratifs (Paris) in 1971. While there, he received the highest peer recognition in European Arts; the coveted Prix de Rome award for painting. Jacques Lamy’s career as an artist, designer and art teacher took him from his native France to life abroad in Spain, Africa, and the United States. His broad artistic interests and his classic training in art and design have enabled him to enjoy a wide variety of artistic experiences from designing furniture, lamps, tapestries, and elegant garden statuary to creating large scale murals for public viewing and enjoyment. in addition to his renowned mural work, Jacques received international recognition for his decorative fresco paintings. Jacques personal artistic style is very much a melding of old and new – a merging of a classically trained artist with a modern artistic vision. The medium is multi-media and the composition has a modern, abstract quality but the Old World training in design and composition lends the whole an air of classical grace. Provenance: Hamilton Gallery of Contemporary Art, New York David Hare (1917 – 1992) was an American artist, associated with the Surrealist movement. He is primarily known for his sculpture, though he also worked extensively in photography and oil painting. The VVV Surrealism Magazine was first published and edited by Hare in 1942. Born March 10, 1917 in New York City, New York to father Meredith Hare, a lawyer and mother Elizabeth Sage Goodwin, an art collector. In the 1920s the family moved first to Santa Fe, New Mexico and later to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in hope that the fresh air would help heal Meredith Hare's tuberculosis. His mother founded the Fountain Valley School, where David attended high school. After high school Hare married and moved to Roxbury, Connecticut where he worked as a color photographer. He attended Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson from 1936 to 1937, studying biology and chemistry. In the late 1930s, with no previous artistic training, he began to experiment with color photography. Using his previous education in chemistry Hare developed an automatist technique called "heatage" in which he heated the unfixed negative from an 8 by 10-inch plate, causing the image to ripple and distort. Hare's Surrealist experiments in photography were only one of his many projects. In 1938 he met Susanna Winslow Wilson and the couple soon married. Both David and Susanna pursued their interests in Surrealism and regularly attended Surrealist gatherings in New York Larre French restaurant on 56th street and at Breton's Greenwich Village apartment. In 1940 he received a commission from the American Museum of Natural History to document the Pueblo Indians of the American Southwest, for which he eventually produced 20 prints developed using Eastman Kodak's then-new dye transfer process (a time-consuming and complicated technique). In the same year, he also opened his own commercial photography studio in New York City and exhibited his photographs in a solo show at the Julien Levy Gallery. In the next few years, through his cousin the painter Kay Sage, he came into contact with a number of Surrealist artists who had fled their native Europe because of World War II. Hare became closely involved with the émigré Surrealist movement and collaborated closely with them on projects such as the Surrealist journal VVV, which he co founded and edited from 1941 to 1944 with André Breton, Max Ernst, and Marcel Duchamp. With numerous illustrations by Breton, Leonora Carrington, Marc Chagall, Roberto Matta, Giorgio de Chirico, MarcelDuchamp, Max Ernst, Andre Masson, Joan Miro, Enrico Donati, Dorothea Tanning, and others. Published in only four issues between 1942-44, VVV was an experimental New York-based magazine devoted to the dissemination of Surrealism.
