About the Item
Signed "Heldt" on the painting and in pencil on the back of the canvas, " Hopscotch - Carl Heldt - Tucson"
"Hopscotch", is an impressive and compelling mid-century modern oil painting on canvas with bold brush strokes and utilization of the pallet knife by renown American artist Carl Heldt (1925 - 2021).
One of largest oils extant in the artist's oeuvre, the canvas measures 72 inches W. x 67.75 inches H..
With the frame, the overall measurements are: 77 inches W. x 73.25 inches H. x 3.75 inches D.
The painting is in excellent original condition. The custom wood frame shows several minor chips and cracks in its black paint.
Heldt's art is owned by more than 50 public institutions and 200 private collections throughout North America.
The following information is courtesy of the artist's estate:
Carl Heldt was born in 1925 and grew up on a farm in rural Stanford, Ill. His interest in art surfaced at an early age. By the time he was nine, he was sketching cattle in the field, painting scenes on the doors in his mother's kitchen and constructing colorful tissue paper mosaics to give an ordinary window in his one-room schoolhouse the look of stained glass.
Heldt graduated from high school at the height of World War II and joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 to train as a pilot. After his discharge he enrolled at the University of Illinois where he graduated with a BFA in painting in 1950. Commissions to create mobiles for Chicago's Merchandise Mart led to large-scale projects, including a 10-foot sculpture for the Marquette Medical Center and a 110-foot metal mural for the Kahler Hotel Hemisphere Room in the Rochester, MN home of the Mayo Clinic.
When the University of Illinois invited him to join their art faculty in 1956, Heldt accepted, and began a 35-year career in academic art, most of it spent as art professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where Heldt and his family relocated in 1961. Heldt painted during this period, often working into the early morning hours. His abstract series of multi-layered impastos won acclaim for their bold compositions and radiating color. Summer breaks from teaching were spent at Hallmark's headquarters in Kansas City where Heldt became the company's artist-in-residence.
His evolution as an artist has never followed a predictable line, and Heldt's early work bears little resemblance to what he does today. "What I do and what media I work in depends entirely on the reality of the moment," he says.
For Heldt, a Professor Emeritus of Art, the reality of the moment is found-wood sculptures that explore the realm of Abstract Expressionism. His three-dimensional compositions are fused with geometrics and texture that come from arrangements of salvaged wood and architectural cast-offs. A baluster from a stairway, a spindle leg from a chair, a croquet ball, drawer runner, or remnant of a tabletop all come to life again in Heldt's compositions.

- Victor Salmones Signed Bronze Bust of a Young ChildBy Victor SalmonesLocated in Los Angeles, CAAn untitled signed bronze sculpture by the Mexican artist, Victor Salmones (1937 - 1989) from an edition of 10. Numbered 1 of 10. Signature "Victor Salmones. 1/10" in cast. In excellent original condition. Victor Salmones (1937-1989) was the most widely known sculptor living and working in Mexico during his lifetime. His sculptures won him universal acclaim and are held in the collections of museums, corporations, cities, universities and private collectors in some 30 countries. During his career, he was highly sought after and increasingly involved in the execution of commissions for major public works around the world. Salmones developed his love and talent for creating sculpture by working with clay in high school. He attended the Instituto de Bellas Artes (Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts), where he was an apprentice to the Bauhaus master, Otto Hoffman. He was trained to use the exacting, age-old lost wax method of casting and worked principally in bronze. Hoffman's encouragement led to the opening of Victor's own sculpture workshop in Cuernavaca in 1966. In 1967, Salmones’ fluid bronze “Adam” won first prize at the Biennale Exposition of the National Museum of Modern Art. His work continued to win the highest critical acclaim at subsequent Biennale expositions, and in 1971, over hundreds of entries, his life-size bronze Narcissus...Category
