About the Item

This oil painting featuring hues of purple, yellow, black and pink. Athens-based artist Carol John’s recent series “Big Bang” features paintings with erratic patterning & brilliant colors layered in order to surprise a viewer’s sensibility. Carol’s paintings work to hypnotize the viewer & to represent familiar objects in unexpected ways. Working with oil paint on canvas and paper, her work references text, pop graphics, interlocking shapes & symbols. She examines familiar shapes & objects like circles, dots, ice cream combs, cigarette butts, lips, words & eyeballs. These forms star in her paintings & are constantly being recombined in new ways. They represent an evolving & continuous dialogue about what painting can be. Carol received a BFA from New York's School of Visual Arts in 1986. For four decades, she’s had a rigorous studio practice, creating brilliantly colored paintings that shift & circle back on themselves over time. Her work has been included in the Atlanta Biennial at the Atlanta Contemporary in 2007 & 2019. Her work has been shown in galleries & institutions nationally, & has pieces in the permanent collection of Atlanta’s High Museum of Art. Publications that have written about her work include New York Magazine, Burnaway, ArtsAtl, Flagpole, The Bitter Southerner & others.

"Wildflower" - nature inspired abstract painting, bright colors
By Marina Dunbar
Located in Atlanta, GA
"Wildflower" features hues of pink, yellow, orange, blue, green and purple. Marina Dunbar is inspired by the work of Paul Jenkins and Morris Louis. “I often think about painting in three dimensions, rather than two,” says Marina. “When engaging with the surface, I am considering how the arrangement and folds of the canvas will influence the composition.” Her process is as rooted in the physical construction of form as it is propelled by the medium’s inherent fluidity. The title of her exhibition – Fluent Form – refers to the practice of exploring opposing concepts, such as density and fragility, continuity and impermanence, within the same material. As one progression leads to the next, Marina studies the medium without premeditation, remaining sensitive to nuances within her process. Marina has introduced natural elements such as dry pigments and sand into these paintings. Sand is a physical object, yet its existence is a representation of the passage of time. It is the result of rock erosion, and it is a material that continually assembles into new patterns. In the Buddhist tradition, sand is used to convey beauty and ephemerality through the construction and subsequent destruction of mandalas...

"Petalled Recollection" - colorful abstract painting - nature - botanical
By Evan Blackwell-Helgeson
Located in Atlanta, GA
This work on canvas is a mixed media abstract work featuring hues of blue, orange, and green. Framed in a natural wood floater frame measuring 20 by 16 inches. Evan is inspired by the works of Frank Bowling, Helen Frankenthaler, Candida Alvarez and Dorothy Hood. Atlanta-based artist, Evan Blackwell Helgeson’s recent body of work “I Know The Place,” is rooted in the exploration & abstraction of nature, combining the representational with the metaphorical & intangible experience of varied landscapes. Her mark-making aims to express the complex compounded layering of experience as we process varying circumstances, emotions & memories while in nature. “I Know The Place” explores the dichotomy & simultaneity of the cycles of nature & lived experience: as new things bloom, something is decaying; as new terrain is explored, a yearning for home grows. Travel in recent years to the Pacific Northwest & Hawaii have deeply influenced Evan’s work, & have come to intertwine with the layered marks & known gestures that express her own home. It has provided a unique contrast to these known environments & subsequent mark making, drawing unique parallels to the way we compile experiences that create our complex perspectives; interweaving memory & possibility to create new paths forward. "Traveling from the dense layers of the treeline where horizons are hidden, a desire to find a path out begins to grow," says Evan. "Similarly, the wide expanse & monolithic scale of the coastline displays the fullness of the horizon & the dizzying implication of new possibilities & the unknown. One does not negate the other, but rather they inform each other, recalling the cycle of being drawn out into new terrain, & receding deep into the comfort of home. An ebb & flow that creates dynamic balance." Evan Blackwell Helgeson is an Atlanta-based artist who works in painting, drawing, installation & ceramics. She received a BFA from the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd...

Purple Flower, Original Painting
By Diana Elena Chelaru
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
An abstract garden scene with purple, blue, and white flowers dancing on a backdrop of fresh greens. Part of a series of small-scale works inspired by the bright colors and lively motifs of spring.

About the Artist
Romanian-born painter Diana Chelaru’s paintings are colorful and contemporary interpretations of human emotion. For Diana, art is a means of communication. “It is how I express my thoughts, hopes, regrets and joys,” she says. Though she gets great pleasure from applying paint to canvas, it is the expression of emotions that she finds to be most important. Diana’s style is influenced by Byzantine mosaics as well as Gustav Klimt’s subject matter and use of decorative patterns within his compositions. Each artwork is created intuitively, resulting in paintings that speak to the soul.
