This colourful contemporary abstract painting is by Carol Sutton.
In the 1970s, the paintings of a young Carol Sutton caught the attention of one of America’s best-known art critics, Clement Greenberg, who visited her studio often. The prolific artist was known for creating large-scale works painted on canvases that were placed on the floor. Sutton was appreciated for her bold use of colour and her intuitive understanding of light. This piece showcases deliciously fresh ‘peppermint’ colours—pinks, greens, red, and white that flow in fluid lines across the canvas. The intense colours are grounded by the addition of chocolate brown and black.

Carol Lorraine Sutton was born in Norfolk, Virginia (1945-2025). In 1969, she obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina and moved to Toronto, Ontario. She began exhibiting her work in 1966 and held more than 32 solo exhibitions during her career, with 94 group shows. Her work is held in collections—both public (notably The Smithsonian Museum of American Art, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston and The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and privately in the US and Canada.
