About the Item

Casey R. Klein is an abstract painter living and working in Los Angeles, California. A self-taught artist, she has been creating work with the same underlying sentiment for over I5 years. Klein cites identity as a central theme in her works, stemming from loss, adolescence, curiosity, and sexuality. With the desire to experiment with abstraction, she observes our natural interconnection and creates engaging, organic stories within her imagery. "My artistic practice is heavily influenced by sexuality, dreams, memories, grief, and how those intangible experiences expose my identity. I am drawn to working on paper and chose this as my medium because of its vulnerability to my errors. I spend a great deal of time with the work and the raw materials that eventually become a finished piece. There's a physicality and sensuality in being present with the substrate, allowing it to breathe and sit in dialogue with it. It forms an intimate bond. Introducing myself to the substrate and receiving permission to perform is essential to the outcome of the final work. Each piece is a narration, a fluid story revealed using abstract forms and striking color, all circumscribed by a perimeter of negative space. My fingers are guides that precisely fold and tear, creating the canvas. My hands generously saturate pigments pulled across this newly formed parchment terroir, leaving behind a light impression of the once opaque smear. Through repetition of this process, I build layers of opacity and transparency that lay and overlay as a protectant shell. Each mark is strategically and carefully placed, though, with an unknown outcome. My work emerges in the forms of stories and riddles that ask questions informed by the intangible but have no answers."

Strangely Prescient
By Jessica Houston
Located in Montreal, Quebec
Jessica Houston’s most recent works look north. What is north? Where is it? Is it a fixed place, or something else? Her second solo show at Art Mûr brings together paintings, a sound sculpture, and chine collé prints, all of which reveal a fragile, fluid, and often fractured, north. An iron ore stone becomes a speaker, playing recordings of interviews and singing, and expanding the physical presence of the stone. The exaggerated textures of the paintings give them, too, a sculptural and documentary feel. They record how actions—breaking and piercing, pushing and pulling—disrupt and transform the paintings’ surfaces. By resembling patterns one finds in the wild—scratches across the surface of a rock, uneven waves that form on melting snow—they unhinge any clear distinction between what is natural and what is made. Made with a printmaking technique that binds together distinct papers, the chine collé prints begin with photographs Houston took of Baffin Island. She then combines the images with coloured paper, creating traces of the process of extracting and replacing parts of a scene, and an equal awareness of both what is present and absent. Some are composed of double circles, like looking through binoculars. In Business As Usual, a decaying interior—peeling wallpaper...

Untitled
By Carly Glovinski
Located in Bozeman, MT
Rooted in observation and fueled by a curiosity about the behavior of objects and handicraft processes, Carly Glovinski makes paintings, sculpture and works on paper that often teeter between representation and abstraction. Letting craft techniques like weaving inform her mark making, her work mimics everyday objects and highlights geometric pattern and structure found in textiles, while exploring the resourceful attitudes associated with domestic craft and rural communities that prioritize placemaking in concert with nature. She received her BFA from Boston University in 2003 and is represented by Morgan Lehman Gallery...
