About the Artist: Charles Ragland Bunnell, born in 1897 in Kansas City, Missouri, developed a deep passion for art from a young age. His early artistic explorations included drawing on walls and textbooks, eventually leading him to study at the Broadmoor Art Academy (now Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center) under the GI Bill in the early 1920s. After marrying fellow art student Laura Palmer in 1922, Bunnell established his studio near Colorado Springs, working in an old railroad boxcar and refining his craft. Throughout his career, Bunnell’s style evolved, influenced by mentors like Ernest Lawson and Boardman Robinson, and shaped by exposure to various art movements such as realism, abstraction, and Abstract Expressionism. In the late 1930s, Bunnell transitioned from American Scene painting to abstraction, as reflected in his emotionally charged "Black and Blue" series. This period was marked by personal tragedies, including the loss of his young son and the devastating effects of World War II, which deepened the emotional intensity of his work. By the late 1940s, Bunnell embraced Abstract Expressionism and became a significant figure in introducing this movement to Colorado Springs. Despite facing resistance from local institutions, his work in this style continued to gain recognition, particularly in the 1950s. Bunnell’s contributions to Abstract Expressionism were recently celebrated in American Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s: An Illustrated Survey, cementing his legacy as a pioneer of modern American art. This painting is an excellent example of Bunnell’s ability to convey emotional depth and complexity through abstraction, making it a significant piece for collectors of Abstract Expressionism and 20th-century American art.
