About the Item

Against a black background, textured like slate, white and gray shapes rise, layered atop one another. In the upper section, a white rectangle casts a shadow that intersects a first square, hollowed at its center, which in turn engages with the lower structure, pierced by a deep, massive black circle. To the right, a white, almost organic curve disrupts the established order. At the bottom, a vivid red line cuts sharply across, traversing the composition horizontally. Christopher Mark Brennan manipulates his choices precisely: black engulfs the space, white illuminates, red shocks, and gray tempers, acting as a bridge between extremes. This gray, scattered here and there, softens the tension, suggesting a transition between absolute black and radiant white—these contrast pit structures against fluidity and stability against dynamism. Geometric abstraction, one of the many experimental terrains of the prolific Californian artist Brennan, reduces reality to pure lines and forms to probe its essence and unveil its vibratory power in resonance with the viewer. Each element—square, circle, curve—interconnects to invite us to contemplate the balance between rigor and disruption. A work in which the artist, a versatile explorer, traces a constellation at the heart of his intimate laboratory. Christopher Mark Brennan was born in 1950. He attended Washington University School of Fine Arts in St Louis, Missouri in 1974. After 1983 he made covers for magazines and artworks for Universal Studios, 3 cover Art for Frank Zappa CD, and other musicians. This work was more like photo-realism in large format. He now lives in Santa Barbara and also makes smaller but still very striking paintings. His imagination seems to have no limit! He lives a private life, not sharing much online besides his art. Shrouded in secrecy, the artist's private life is a fascinating aspect that contrasts with the current trend of pop art and photorealistic-inspired paintings. While this artistic movement often portrays art as a consumable entity - one that is temporary, cheap, and quickly discarded - many artists have also become products to be rapidly consumed and forgotten. However, Brennan has managed to avoid this trend and reverse it.
