Daniel Klewer
'Irrational Isolation' original acrylic painting signed by Daniel Klewer

2017

About the Item

'Irrational Isolation' is an excellent example of the work of Daniel Klewer, coming from his series 'Botanical Abstractions.' His works in this series follow strict, self-imposed rules: Klewer paints the composition, then removes the paint surface, literally stripping back the initial gestural painting and re-attaching the removed paint to the edge of the canvas. As the painted surface is repeatedly scraped over, the original compositions are distorted, blurred, and given new life. 'Irrational Isolation' contains the subtle references to plant life motifs that dominate the series, but the relationship of the imagery to the title is intentionally unclear. Such titles work to suggest meaning, rather than to make meaning literal. Words, when repeated over and over, have meanings that change, just as do Klewer's strokes of paint when removed and replaced across a painted surface. 16 x 18 x 1.5 inches Signed in ink on reverse Unframed Daniel Klewer was born and raised in Milwaukee and studied art at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay before earning a Master of Arts in visual studies from Cardinal Stritch University. He is now based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Klewer is best known for his painting process, which over the years has evolved into him nearly doing away with the brush and implementing a non-traditional paint application. Daniel’s love of oil and acrylic paint is evident in his treatment of his abstract paint surfaces. He enjoys a meditative, sequential process where the spontaneity of the material is allowed to influence the direction of the work. The methodical approach Klewer uses results in paintings that resemble photocopies or blurred photographs, recalling not only the blurred and scraped work of Gerhard Richter, but also the screen prints of Pop Artists like Andy Warhol.

She was born in the Northern Region of Uganda, along the northern shores of Lake Kyoga. Stella started her schooling in Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. She relocated to Kenya and continued her education there. Later, she completed her education in the United Kingdom. She has a bachelors and a master's degree in Fine Art. She comfortably paints both miniature and large wall hangings using acrylics and water- based textile paints, she uses materials such as bark cloth, recycled paper made out of water hyacinth, Hessian, canvas and many other tradition materials. Her unique art pieces are inspired by ancient and contemporary African designs. They depict typical village scenes of life around Lake Victoria. 'Painting is the only way I can get back to my roots by using our cultural materials such as bark cloth that was used by our ancestors and helps me preserve my culture through some of the motifs I use that were used long ago as signs of belief and worship in the African culture.' Her distinctive artwork is well known in Uganda and throughout East Africa. Her bold, fluid lines explore complex subjects such as women empowerment and national development with economy and grace. Her central artistic preoccupation is the continuation of distinctively African culture. In 2007, she started her own label, Atal Stella. There she focuses on using what is locally available, including eco-friendly, natural and re-cycled material. Her designs have showcased at the Africa Fashion Week New York, in 2010 and at the Green Fashion...
