About the Item
This conceptual text based painting by New York artist, David Kramer, incorporates gestural swatches of color over a controlled pastel striped ground. The bold text reads: "I AM COMPETING WITH KITTENS TO GET YOUR ATTENTION". Complete with glitter embedded in the paint, this is a striking commentary on our digitally driven culture of distraction. The social media memes of cats and kittens are ubiquitous and the artist uses humor to comment on our distracted views and overuse of digital communication and socialization. This bold statement painting incorporates satire with a contemporary abstract art composition. Fusing aspects of pop art, gestural abstraction and contemporary text based art, this large scale painting is an excellent statement piece.
David Kramer incorporates influences from the 1970's lifestyle advertisements and distinctive interior design into paintings, drawings, and installations which are both nostalgic and ironic.
His compositions resemble the advertisements that, as he claims (with the tongue-in-cheek humor that shapes his output), modeled his future: “I felt certain that my future would look a lot like what I was looking at in those ads. […] I am still hoping to grow up and get my hands on those things.” Text is central to Kramer’s work. He overlays what he calls “one-liners” onto his images, revealing the falsity of the idealized vision they present and the disillusionment of adulthood.
In his latest body of work Kramer tackles inequity and disaffection using biting humor and satirical wit. “Tired Jokes” is anything but tired. While Kramer’s style may often borrow heavily from bygone eras, in this show Kramer turns the lens of his “Americana” onto America itself.
Front Room first became involved with David Kramer in 2004, when we featured him in the exhibition “Sellout” at Voorkamer gallery in Lier, Belgium (which coincidentally means “Front Room in Dutch). He has exhibited internationally. His work is in the collection of the Pompidou Museum and Museum London, Ontario, and he has screened his videos and performed at the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Pompidou Museum, and many other institutions and galleries.
His most recent collaboration with Celine was just released in this years Celine Hedi Slimane collection 2020 Celine menswear show.

Die liebe Katze
By Starsky Brines
Located in New Orleans, LA
STARSKY BRINE’s paintings and drawings captivate audiences with their distinctive style and a recurring theme, the search for the nature of humanity. In his bold works, the artist focuses on characters that are built from a combination of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic features, as well as the appropriation of elements from comics and toys from his childhood.
On the one hand, these characters distort reality to venture into an environment of subcultures and urbanism created by the spontaneous intuition of his strokes and the appropriation of the contemporary iconography. On the other hand, they move within the realm of fantasy. In particular, the animals paired with their human characters evoke associations with fairy tales or comics. They are reminiscent of the world of theatre, in which fantasy and poetry but also comedy often serve as catalysts for the creation of critical meaning.
With his works, Brines often questions the interplay of good and evil against the background of the worldwide socio-political climate. Yet Brines does not interpret his themes as ‘black and white.’ They are complex and nonlinear, with charming disruptions, quite serious and yet full of humor.
Brines is personally influenced by his mother and art historically influenced by Latin American figurative art, the German Neoexpressionism, the Italian Transavantgarde, and the COBRA group. His works oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Brines holds a degree in Fine Art from the Instituto Universitario de Estudios Superiores de Artes Plásticas Armando Reverón...

Florus, Bold Abstract Painting, Vibrant Contemporary Artwork, Expressionist Art
By Catherine Pennington-Meyer
Located in Deddington, GB
Florus is an original abstract painting by Catherine Pennington-Meyer. The title of this piece means ‘bright’ or ‘rich’ in Latin. A vibrant expressionist abstract full of energy. It will bring a splash of positivity and colour to any scheme.
Discover more of Catherine Pennington-Meyer's original artwork with Wychwood Art online and in our Oxfordshire gallery. Catherine is an award-winning artist who currently lives and works near Munich, in Germany. Her work concentrates primarily on abstract expressionism. Catherine has participated in exhibitions throughout Europe and has quickly established a prestigious international collector base. Catherine says of her art: `I see my painting as a kind of language, translating what I feel or experience to those viewing it. I am innately drawn to create raw, emotive, expressionist pieces, mostly abstracts, which distil a subject down to its feeling. I don`t only want my art to be `beautiful` but for it to reach out and touch the person who is viewing it on an immediate, intuitive level. I want my paintings to speak to their audience in their own visceral language. I am influenced by nature, particularly the multifaceted nature of water, and memories of growing up in particularly beautiful landscapes in North Yorkshire and Scotland. I also find human psychology and science fascinating. But I see compositions everywhere, whether it be flowers in a park, the way smoke curls, books on a library shelf or a street market. Everything is made up of shapes and colours. The world is a constant source influences and inspiration.’ Over time, as her work has developed, she has been increasingly compelled towards abstraction, through which she feels able to communicate an energy which is untethered by the constraints of realism. She enjoys playing with light, depth and movement in her art to give it immediacy and to draw a viewer into the composition. Catherine also enjoys poetry, and her works occasionally have accompanying narratives. Catherine views visual and written art...
