- "Up"By Tom HollandLocated in New York, NYThis sophisiticated oil on canvas work was realized by the esteemed Bay Area artist Tom Holland circa 1961, and boasts a prestigious provenance from the Stanford Museum of Art. Combining elements of futurism, Art Brut and Art Naif, with inspiration from his Bay Area contemporaries (such as Richard Diebenkorn), Holland has achieved both critical and commercial success over the last five plus decades of his career. He is currently represented by galleries in Dallas, Santa Fe and San Francisco and his prints are exhibited by Crown Point Press in San Francisco and Cirrus Editions in Los Angeles. This piece represents an exceptional example of his early practice. It offers a wealth of organic and geometric forms in coffee and chocolate brown, rendered in thick impasto, with cobalt blue peaking out from beneath. There are two orbital forms in the lower half of the canvas painted in a burnt umber hue. With its sophisticated palette and painterly aesthetic, this piece would be a winning acquisition for any avid collector of first-rate Mid Century Modern fine art...Category

- Turkish LA Artist Modernist Abstract Portrait in Silver Leaf on Paper PaintingBy Ali AcerolLocated in Surfside, FLAli Acerol, who was born in Bursa, Turkey in 1948 and died in Los Angeles in 2007, became a kind of legend in the Southern California art world for his stunning maps of countries and continents, his invented and satiric postage stamps, and his brick furniture— as well as for being stubborn, impossible, and brilliant. He grew up in Istanbul, then was educated at the Sorbonne, in Paris. Acerol said that his earliest memories were of taking walks with his father in Istanbul and noticing old brick walls. He continued his fine arts education in 1975 at CalArts in Southern California. This piece contains elements of Arabic and Islamic calligraphic abstraction. This first posthumous exhibition of works is drawn primarily from the collection of Richard Hertz, author of two influential works on the local art scene: Jack Goldstein and the CalArts Mafia and The Beat and the Buzz: Inside the LA Art World. The show includes Acerol’s magnificent eight by twelve-foot World Map that has not been seen in public for over thirty years. The World Map, covered with sign language that names the countries and cities, was originally Acerol’s MFA thesis project. Like all his works, it does not speak in simple terms. As critic Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe wrote, Ali’s art is about parallel meanings and mutual incomprehension — “lots of little hands where there should be words, a symbolic code unfamiliar to most…” Turkish Artist Ali arrived in California in 1975 after seven years in Paris and enrolled at Cal Arts, then in its fifth year of existence. Soon he became close friends with such well-known artists as John Baldessari and Michael Asher, the godfathers of the art program, along with many colleagues such as Diane Buckler...Category

- Wendover.3By Joseph OstraffLocated in Salt Lake City, UT"Wendover 3" by Joseph Ostraff, oil on panel, 36 X 31 inches, $4,800. "For me, paint documents the state of things, how I feel and what is at the forefront in my thinking—maybe it’s like the soup of the day. I do not consider this process to be anything special in itself. The paintings record the daily random and absurd associations I make, which seem interesting to me after the fact. The Domestic paintings are a case in point. My wife and I have six children. Four have left home. Three are married. We are left with two children, both currently in middle school. We have about five years and they too will move out. This is on my mind. I am thinking about the layers of memories and it comes out as layers of paint. Feeling nostalgic, I think about all the noise and activity our home has absorbed. In turn, I found children’s large vinyl decals from Angry Birds...Category
