In this contemporary abstract painting in gouache and acrylic on paper, clean and precise, carefully ordered thick horizontal stripes in shades of peach, light blue, dark navy, and a dark coral shade of orange are bright against the pale off-white color of the archival paper.
Signed, dated and titled on recto. 9 x 8 inches (image size), 14 x 11 inches (paper size) (unframed), 18.5 x 15 inches (framed). Framed in a white rubbed wood frame with Plexiglas.
Elizabeth Gourlay’s work is a meditation on color and form, a gradual yet progressive analysis leading to a complex vocabulary of shapes, color and line. Musical composition, emotional states and our collective subconscious resonate within bars, lines and blocks of color. The abstract forms emerge, layer and shift in precisely ordered, carefully composed rhythms. The artist contemplates the elements that make color in reduced forms come to life: size, flatness, relation to its edges, and how the presence of other colors affect how it is perceived.
Gourlay draws inspiration from shapes found in everyday life and in her studio. The observed shapes either remain as they are or become simplified to their essential geometric elements. Subtleties in color, area, edge or orientation are the catalyst for emotive responses. Palette is minimized; the artist rarely uses a wide palette within one work. Rather, a broad range of colors are explored and then reduced. Gourlay investigates color properties: complementary or analogous color, value, saturation and color harmony vs. color anomaly.
Elizabeth’s Gourlay’s work has been shown extensively throughout the United States. The artist is the recipient of numerous residencies, fellowships and awards including Artist in Residence at the studio of Sol LeWitt in Spoleto, Italy. Gourlay’s work has been written about in The New Criterion, Painters’ Table and Gorky’s Granddaughter, to name a few. Gourlay earned her MFA at Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT, and her BA from Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2024, Elizabeth Gourlay's luminous career was cut short by illness. The artist lived and worked in CT.

Elizabeth Gourlay
Elizabeth Gourlay is an American abstract artist, whose work emerges from a progressive process of layering color, lines and forms, informed both by inner emotional states, and her observation of nature and architecture. She lives and works in Chester, Connecticut. She was invited to work with Master Printer Anthony Kirk. Gourlay finds the immediacy and experimental quality of monotypes valuable to her practice as an artist. Her work is featured in various private and corporate collections, including The Lewitt Collection, The Marriott Family and Yale University. She is the recipient of several grants and fellowships, including two Individual Artist State Grants from the DECD/Connecticut Office of the Arts. In 2011, she was an invited artist in residence at the studio of Sol LeWitt, Spoleto, Italy. Gourlay uses a wide range of media such as oil, flashe, acrylic, ink and graphite to create artfully simple and strong compositions. Gourlay thinks of her work as a meditation on colors, lines and forms, leading to a complex network of shifting shapes and colors. She has an interest in elements found in nature, architecture and music, drawing lines, grids and geometric shapes to demonstrate it. Indeed, her work is often described by its musicality and architectural connotations. The use of line suggests influences from Agnes Martin, while her play of color reminds Paul Klee’s work. Her compositions deal with order and chaos using a line, color and shape.

Janet Jennings is known for her luminous oil & watercolor paintings. After working for Lawrence Rubin at Knoedler Contemporary Art, Jennings maintained a studio at Waverly Studios in New York City. She began as a Color Field painter, working on canvas and linen. Janet moved to Amagansett, NY in 1981 and switched her focus to landscape painting. Her career path led her to teach at The Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall & The Victor D’amico Institute of Art. From 1993 to 1998, she was the Chair of the Andy Warhol Visual Arts Preserve Program. Jennings maintains ties to the art community as an educator and curator. She is a member of the East Hampton Arts Council, an advocacy group for performing and visual artists of East Hampton. Ms. Jennings maintains a painting studio in East Hampton and currently teaches oil and watercolor classes. In 1997, she was a founding member of CMEE, The Children’s Museum of the East End. Working with Lee Skolnick and JoAnn Secor, she was an exhibit designer and fabricator for “Time and Place, Light and Space”, the initial installation at Guild Hall, which launched CMEE. She was a lead designer for the permanent exhibition installation of CMEE, located in Bridgehampton, NY. Jennings received her BFA from the University of Dayton and attended The Dayton Art Institute, Antioch College and The Art Students League. Her paintings are in numerous corporate and private collections worldwide.
