About the Item

Mexican Modernist Oil Painting - Double Sided Abstract Figures and Buildings Dynamic abstract pieces by Ernesto Butterlin, aka Linares, (Mexican, German b. 1917 d. 1964.) The front side is rendered in deep blues and greys with white glowing geometric and organic shapes, giving the feeling of a city or figures at night. These deep blues are contrasted by highlights in yellow and areas of a muted red. The use of shape and light is reminiscent of both cubism and surrealism. The piece is further enhanced with a variety of material techniques, such as dry-brush and impasto. On the verso is another composition, this one in warm tones with areas of bold yellow. Shapes which mimic hands and fingers are littered across this composition, along with geometric areas and bold line work. The piece is full of movement and pushes against the edges of the board, with the largest area of rest found in the top left corner. Board size: 24" H x 32" W Signed "Linares 46" in bottom left corner and on verso "Linares" in bottom left corner. Ernesto Butterlin was born to German parents in Guadalajara on September 4, 1917. He began using the name Linares for his art in his 20s, and was known as simply Lynn to his friends. His family owned an orchard in the town of Ajiji on the nearby Lake Chapala, and Ernesto would spend the majority of his artistic career living in Ajiji. The majority of records on his life come from the writings of other artists who visited Ajiji throughout his life. From 1943 to 1945 he lived with American artists Charmin Schlossman Lanier and Sylvia Fein and in 1943 American writer Neill James remarked upon Linares showing his art in traveling shows throughout the USA. In January 1947 he showed his art at a group show at Villa Montecarlo in Chapala with Charmin Schlossman, Muriel Lytton-Bernard, and Dick Kitchin. He befriended the artist and author Tobias Schneebaum in the late 1950s and Schneebaum wrote of Lynn in his book, Wild Man, stating that "He painted during the day with bright reds and yellows in wide bands of color, freely brushed and ripped on, a technique he claimed preceded Jackson Pollock, who he insisted had seen his work. He'd had one-man shows in New York and Mexico City." (pg. 12.) In 1948, Linares and his brothers opened an art gallery in Ajiji where they would display their works. In 1945 he exhibited alongside major artists, such as Leonora Carrington, at the the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. Ernesto Butterlin died in 1964, likely of cancer, although accounts of his death differ. Despite his seeming success and connection to many other major artists, very little of Linare's artwork is located today or housed in public collections.
