Eve Drewelowe
Alpha: 1950s Framed Abstract Textured Mixed Media Oil Painting – The Beginning

1957

About the Item

Discover a stunning 1950s mid-century modern abstract oil painting by renowned Colorado modernist artist Eve Drewelowe (1899–1989). Titled "Alpha – The Beginning," this textured mixed-media masterpiece features a warm, earthy color palette with rich hues of ivory, tan, brown, yellow, turquoise blue, green, coral, red, and orange. About the Artist – Eve Drewelowe (1899–1989) A pioneering female artist, Eve Drewelowe was the first student to earn a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. Though she moved to Boulder, Colorado, as a dean’s wife, she refused to let societal expectations suppress her artistic spirit. After a major health crisis, she experienced what she called a "reincarnation," dedicating herself fully to her creative vision. Born on an Iowa farm, Drewelowe developed a deep love for nature, influenced by her father’s early teachings on environmentalism. Her passion for the Rocky Mountains inspired her to create bold, animated landscapes filled with energy, movement, and vibrant, rippling colors. By the 1940s, she was already speaking out against human encroachment on the natural world. Her later works leaned toward abstraction, but her message remained strong—she lamented the pollution and destruction of the environment, urging the world to reclaim its natural beauty. "We cry for the return of the lustrously vibrant, happy colors of the beauteously carved and sculpted land... The silence that has disgraced the hills must be reversed, and the singing must be heard again." – Eve Drewelowe This remarkable painting is not just a visual masterpiece—it embodies the passion and legacy of a trailblazing modernist woman artist whose work continues to captivate collectors and art enthusiasts today.
