Artist's Statement: "I was working on my "Gridish" paintings (you can find them in a search on the term "Gridish" on this site) when I became fascinated with certain materials I was working with - a new type of super-flat, super-black paint; powdered graphite; and iron oxide pigment. I had a small canvas ready to go, and shifted my attention to concentrating on just one of the rectangular forms I had been using in the Gridish series, and applying these materials in a way that pleased me. That sort of industrial sheen on the surface of the rectangle is really beautiful to me. This was a second I made, on paper. Quite obviously the mood given off by these works is greatly different from the colorful Gridish paintings that spawned them. My daughter, studying design at RISD, said she found the pic I sent of the original painting 'gloomy.' I don't; I just like the beauty of the materials, and I find the painting more elegant and sophisticated than depressing."

Artist’s Statement: “As I often do, I chose a very simple form to work with in this series of paintings – a grid of rectangles. It was some Sean Scully forms I was thinking of when I started these. Content never interests me much, and I don’t spend time thinking about it. I’m interested in the balance of assonant and dissonant colors, line quality, texture and impasto, push and pull, these sorts of issues. Making the paintings is a series of minute decisions about addition and subtraction that goes on for a long time, even if the result looks deceptively simple. It’s never simple to do. These have been selling here in New Orleans before I have been able to list them, so I have been pulling out select ones to show only online, so that collectors of my work elsewhere and new folks get a chance to see them."
“Lyman’s work evolves restlessly, with the common elements generally being deft and unusual color choices that balance assonance and dissonance, and vestiges of the hand and facture purposely left in the paintings. The negative space is often so meticulously worked that it’s almost as if the objects – usually simple shapes – are there as much to complement the background as vice versa. Despite the often bold colors there is an elegance about his paintings that prevents them from being either loud or decorative. "

G. Campbell Lyman
G. Campbell Lyman is a prolific collector of works by lesser heralded artists and an accomplished abstract painter in his own right. Lyman’s own abstract paintings and watercolors comprise repeating patterns of irregular circles, rectangles, whorls and cellular forms painted with thick brushstrokes in vivacious hues.
Lyman grew up in New Orleans, where he started collecting and making his art as a teenager. When he was around 30 years old, he began traveling to discover and sell undervalued art, living in various places in the United States and Europe.
Eventually, he returned to New Orleans and opened Guy Lyman Fine Art on the city’s famous Magazine Street. He operated the gallery for several years before moving his business entirely online in the late 2010s. Lyman divides his inventory into four sections: 19th- and early 20th-century art, modern and contemporary art, New Orleans and Louisiana art, and finally, his own creations.
Lyman cites "painterly" painters like Robert Rauschenberg, Sean Scully, Cy Twombly and Julian Schnabel — as well as movements such as Pop art and Abstract Expressionism — as having influenced his work. He is less concerned about the forms on the canvas and more about the paint’s texture, color and line, as well as the negative space around it. He appreciates and creates art that shows the presence of the artist's hand.
Lyman's work is held in art collections from California and Aspen to London and Beirut. He strives to keep his prices affordable for a broader demographic of collectors.

"This series of intensely colorful paintings was begun a couple of years back in reaction to the gray oppressive weight that had descended like a pall on the American scene. I wanted to make paintings about nothing but pure delight, in honor of the fact that beneath the fog of germs and political antagonism, we still eat, laugh, love and if we're wise, acknowledge how spectacularly fortunate we are -- at least for now, in this time and place, despite the problems. For me, the colors, forms and brushstrokes here feel exuberant without suggesting an unnerving chaos. I have purposely used unlikely color combinations that despite their dissonance seem to work together. I don't feel this is a time to be making brooding works that reflect the problems we are working our way through; we all know about this. On the contrary, I think it's a time for art...
