Artist's statement:
"Though I am an abstract painter by tradition, I painted this somewhat figurative painting to express the feeling I have developed over the past couple of years (related to Covid in particular). I don't see it as a bleak or depressing painting. "This too shall end," and perhaps has already begun to. But I find myself still anticipating some notable change - as though I am this entombed figure in a sort of holding state, and above ground is a more vital existence that is to return (here, an aqueduct, symbolizing both water and the structure of Western culture that underpins my daily existence, particularly as it relates to art). I believe many others feel this way - in some sense isolated or blocked off from normality, and waiting. Again, I am quite optimistic, and this painting merely records the feeling I think many of us have had over the past couple of years, not just the negative aspect, but also the sense of light at the end of the tunnel (or to mix metaphors: the life that awaits us back above ground).
“Lyman’s work evolves restlessly, with the common elements generally being deft and unusual color choices that balance assonance and dissonance, and vestiges of the hand and facture purposely left in the paintings. The negative space is often so meticulously worked that it’s almost as if the objects – usually simple shapes – are there as much to complement the background as vice versa. Despite the often bold colors there is an elegance about his paintings that prevents them from being loud or decorative. "

G. Campbell Lyman
G. Campbell Lyman is a prolific collector of works by lesser heralded artists and an accomplished abstract painter in his own right. Lyman’s own abstract paintings and watercolors comprise repeating patterns of irregular circles, rectangles, whorls and cellular forms painted with thick brushstrokes in vivacious hues.
Lyman grew up in New Orleans, where he started collecting and making his art as a teenager. When he was around 30 years old, he began traveling to discover and sell undervalued art, living in various places in the United States and Europe.
Eventually, he returned to New Orleans and opened Guy Lyman Fine Art on the city’s famous Magazine Street. He operated the gallery for several years before moving his business entirely online in the late 2010s. Lyman divides his inventory into four sections: 19th- and early 20th-century art, modern and contemporary art, New Orleans and Louisiana art, and finally, his own creations.
Lyman cites "painterly" painters like Robert Rauschenberg, Sean Scully, Cy Twombly and Julian Schnabel — as well as movements such as Pop art and Abstract Expressionism — as having influenced his work. He is less concerned about the forms on the canvas and more about the paint’s texture, color and line, as well as the negative space around it. He appreciates and creates art that shows the presence of the artist's hand.
Lyman's work is held in art collections from California and Aspen to London and Beirut. He strives to keep his prices affordable for a broader demographic of collectors.

"This series of intensely colorful paintings was begun a couple of years back in reaction to the gray oppressive weight that had descended like a pall on the American scene. I wanted to make paintings about nothing but pure delight, in honor of the fact that beneath the fog of germs and political antagonism, we still eat, laugh, love and if we're wise, acknowledge how spectacularly fortunate we are -- at least for now, in this time and place, despite the problems. For me, the colors, forms and brushstrokes here feel exuberant without suggesting an unnerving chaos. I have purposely used unlikely color combinations that despite their dissonance seem to work together. I don't feel this is a time to be making brooding works that reflect the problems we are working our way through; we all know about this. On the contrary, I think it's a time for art...

"Separate from the tar paintings I have been doing, I am creating a series of work in which I am channeling some of the things I have always loved about Cy Twombly along with qualities of a painting I saw in a local collection by a Cuban painter that I really admired and have thought about a lot since. Of course both share a graffiti quality; Twombly was the first to work with a sort of automatic drawing, beginning in the 1950s, and what he did opened up this new language for countless painters. You still see traces of it in so much contemporary art. Antoni Tapies has been a big influence on me as well, and you can see some of him in this work as well. I limited the color palette in this one as a sort of exercise in discipline, since it is easy to let color get away from you in a painting like this one. There are areas of three-dimensional paint that help flatten the picture plane and restrict the eye from reading depth into the painting; they function in the same way as Barnett Newman's 'zips' and Susan Rothenberg's lines across some of her horse images...
