Imaginary magic landscapes and spatial ambiguity are often the focus of Gian Berto Vanni's paintings. The multiple references to zoology, mythology, geological and cellular forms create an imagery that is in constant transformation, with a use of colors reminiscent of tropical butterflies and precious crystal formations. This painting is created around a central piece of wood, like an island seen from above. The bright and intense blue and orange formations that surround it are like coral reefs surrounding the island. Vanni spent most of his life visiting exotic and tropical destinations around the world, from Indonesia to Yucatan and the intense colors of those magnificent lands often come back in his work. Gian Berto Vanni was born in Rome. He studied with Vordemberge-Gildewart in Holland and color theory with Joseph Albers at Yale University in New Haven. He has been actively involved in the Italian Art scene of the 60s, moving to New York City at the end of the 70s. He has been teaching color theory at Cooper Union School of Art in NYC for 30 years. He currently lives and works in New York and Greece. His works have been shown in galleries in the United States, Europe and Japan.
