About the Item
This Mid-Century Modernist Ink & Acrylic Abstracted Painting of Sailboat is by Gino Hollander American, C.1969. This small yet impactful compostiion features a base layer of expressive acrylic strokes, tumultous and textured resembling the energetic crash of wind and ocean waves. In slender black lines of ink the skeleton of a sail boat is depicted, enveloped by the blue and white of the foaming waves, the top of the mast emerging from the stormy strokes. A part of the abstract expressionist movement and an early adopter of acrylic paint, Gino Hollander creates expressive and ethereal spaces with incredible energy and presence. A striking piece fitted with a linen floater in a giltwood gallery frame. Signed by the artist on the front left. In Excellent Vintage Condition.

Gino Hollander
Born in 1924 in Newark, NJ, Gino Hollander attended Rutgers University before serving in the U.S. Army’s Mountain Division Ski Troop during World War II. Hollander had a successful career as a documentary filmmaker throughout the 1950s. In 1960, he decided to focus on painting after becoming friends with Abstract Expressionist painters at the Cedar Tavern. He died at the age of 91 in 2015 in Newport Beach, CA.
