About the Item

Handel Organ Concerto Opus 4 No.6 B Flat Major - III Allegro Watercolor and mixed pigments on paper, c. 1960's Signed and titled recto (see photos) Condition: Excellent Image: 19 3/4 x 13 3/4" Frame: 27 1/2 x 21" Provenance: Estate of the Artist Hildegarde Haas (1926–2002) was an American artist. She was born in Frankfurt, Germany and moved to the US with her parents in 1937. Haas attended the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for summer classes before attending the University of Chicago for two years. When she received a scholarship to the Art Students League of New York she began studying under Vaclav Vytlacil and Morris Kantor. After seven years she was forced to give up carving due to the physical demands of the craft and she picked up painting instead. In 1951, Haas relocated to Northern California and became involved with Bay Area arts organizations. “Haas had a condition called "synesthesia" which allowed her to visualize music she heard and she would work while listening to music. Her woodcuts, which lean toward rhythmic and calligraphic abstraction, were included in the exhibition "Young American Printmakers" at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1953. She exhibited nationally at juried exhibitions and her work frequently drew comments by critics highlighting these shows. The physical demands of carving her own blocks and hand printing each impression were too great so after seven years she put down her knives and gouges and exchanged them for brushes.” Courtesy Davidson Galleries Public Collections • Museum of Modern Art, New York • Smithsonian American Art Museum • National Gallery of Art, Washington • Dallas Museum of Art • Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts • Cleveland Museum of Art • Library of Congress, Washngton • Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington • Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts
