About the Item
Resonance (30/21) is an artwork by contemporary artist James Lumsden, dimensions are 30 x 30 cm (11.8 x 11.8 in).
This artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
James Lumsden’s abstract paintings delve into the interplay of light, colour, and depth, drawing the viewer into a world where perception and sensation intertwine. His creative process is meditative and meticulous, involving the gradual application of numerous translucent layers of acrylic paint and gel gloss. Using specially chosen tools, Lumsden manipulates the surface—revealing, obscuring, and reshaping marks in a delicate balance between precision and spontaneity.
Through this layered technique, he achieves a remarkable illusion: the paint appears to glow from within, suggesting movement, tension, and stillness all at once. What results is a visual experience that feels immersive and contemplative, charged with a quiet yet compelling energy.
The marks and colour fields that appear to rest on the surface often seem to rise from deep within the canvas itself, embodying what Lumsden describes as “an act of fixed movement.” Vivid and translucent tones merge or contrast, creating compositions that are simultaneously bold and subtle, structured yet organic. The process is both intuitive and deliberate, allowing space for both chance and control to shape the final image.
“I want to see something brought to life, struggled for, with a sense of having its own history, and reflective of the time spent on its creation. My aim is to create something positive and affirming which is filled with both light and darkness, contrasts, hesitations and contradictions – open paintings which allow the viewer’s imagination to search, wander or react at will.” – James Lumsden
Through this layered, luminous approach, Lumsden’s works invite viewers into a dynamic visual field—open-ended, emotionally resonant, and deeply human in their quiet complexity.

James Lumsden’s abstract paintings seem to emanate an inner light and give the illusion of movement. His creative process involves superimposing dozens of thin layers of acrylic paint onto the canvas. Layer by layer, the artist succeeds in creating an illusion of depth and light within the painting, immersing the viewer in a mysterious and seductive universe. Translucent, vibrant colours are juxtaposed and blended to create delicate yet bold and contrasting combinations. The material support is thus transformed into a poetic work of art full of emotion. “I aim to make paintings which are luminous, seductive, sensual, and atmospheric. I am fascinated in how the basic materials innate to the medium can be turned into something poetic; an object filled with light, feeling, and emotion. The struggle lies in attempting to reach that stage.”
