Fire Starter (20) (Abstract painting)
Acrylic on canvas — Unframed.
This work is exclusive to IdeelArt.
This work is part of the series Asphalt Abstracted Ad Astra.
Metamodern, existential, colorful, Engelund's paintings take us further into visceral encounters with paint and text as his landscapes abstract into the poetic road via a playful cosmos.
Engelund seamlessly juxtaposes contradictory notions of painting, from zen-like hand-less aretê to childlike technê, while embracing the range of simple pleasures of, to the ab-ex impact of color. Text in Engelund’s new works becomes more prominent than his previous work ranging from poetic playfulness to addressing philosophical problems. Soulful, channeling the progressive California spirit Engelund’s new paintings are an investigation into universal if personal metamodern concerns.
Jason Engelund’s new paintings “Asphalt Abstracted Ad Astra” are represented by IdeelArt Paris, London.
Engelund earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction at the California College of Arts and Crafts and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Davis. Jason Engelund
San Francisco-based artist Jason Engelund merges aspects of painting and photography in ways that expand the definition of both mediums. His compositions are grounded in the realm of landscape, where foreground and background elements lead the eye inwards towards a rational picture space. Engelund upends that sensible grasp of visual reality, which we have come to expect from a landscape photograph, dissolving into an abstracted dreamscape in which the mind is tantalized by psychedelic color fields, burned out light blots, flashes of text, and visceral encounters with paint. Positioned somewhere between memory and metaphor, the work invites viewers to question pre-supposed limitations of the photographic image. Engelund earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction at the California College of Arts and Crafts and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Davis. In addition to numerous private collections, work by Engelund is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Photographic Arts of San Diego.

Real Fire: abstract painting w/ spray paint graffiti tag in red & black
By Mat Tomezsko
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
Mat Tomezko's latest series of mixed media paintings uses evocative materials and imagery of fire, flowers, food, newspapers, asphalt, and ash to illuminate the interconnectedness of destructive and creative forces. "Real Fire" depicts flames and fire above a segment of abstract forms in spray paint recalling street art and graffiti tags. This painting is signed and dated on the back. It includes all hanging hardware and is ready to install -- no need for additional framing.
Tomezsko is an artist from Philadelphia who creates abstract paintings, public art installations, and community art projects based around participation and everyday visual language. His approach to composition is informed by mid-century formalism and conceptualism. His work was recognized by the 2017 Americans for the Arts Public Art Network Year in Review for outstanding public art. Tomezsko’s work has been exhibited at numerous art spaces regionally and nationally, including the Crane Arts, Woodmere Art Museum, the Center For Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), and Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia; Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, IL; the Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington, DE; and Thomas Hunter Projects in New York, NY. He has created several notable public art projects including "14 Movements: A Symphony in Color and Words," a mile-long temporary mural installed in downtown Philadelphia during the 2016 Democratic National Convention; "Look Long and Look Good," a series of 30 paintings currently installed along Main Street in Manayunk; and "Flowering Axes," a mural in the 5th Street Vehicular Tunnel underneath the Ben Franklin Bridge.
His work is in the collection of The Wharton...
