Jean Soyer
Dynamic Dark Blue Abstract Marine Modern Oil Painting by Jean Soyer

About the Item

A powerful abstract oil painting on canvas (45x57 inches) dominated by deep blue tones and dramatic black accents. Created by Jean Soyer using his signature technique of large brushstrokes and combing methods, the artwork features bold gestural movements and thick impasto textures. The dynamic composition suggests a powerful forward motion, with sweeping strokes creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. This commanding abstract composition showcases the raw energy and gestural freedom that characterizes Jean Soyer's work. The dramatic sweeping movements and rich cobalt blues evoke a sense of untamed motion, reminiscent of Pierre Soulages's bold abstractions and Hans Hartung's dynamic mark-making. While Soyer acknowledges influence from Nicolas de Staël, this particular piece seems to channel more of the spontaneous energy found in Georges Mathieu's theatrical gestural works. The painting's powerful directional force could suggest the movement of waves in the storm, though this remains open to interpretation. The artist's distinctive use of combing techniques creates a fascinating texture that adds depth and complexity to the work, while his manipulation of paint thickness demonstrates masterful control over the medium. The composition's emotional intensity and scale place it firmly within the tradition of post-war European abstract expressionism, while maintaining a contemporary relevance through its bold, minimalist color palette.

In the middle of the road
By Dana Frankfort
Located in Houston, TX
Dana Frankfort In the middle of the road, 2017 oil on canvas over panel 48 x 48 x 1.75 inches For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe. Imperatives, allusions, evocations—the words dissolve into a palimpsest of obscured serifs and stems, into color and form. The title of the work is a phrase from a poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade’s “In the Middle of Road.” Here it is, translated from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Bishop...
