The following is sourced from an interview with the artist by Boston Voyager (2018)
"I grew up in Boston but now live in New York. My first experience viewing contemporary art was at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University. With my college age cousin, I frequently viewed exhibitions of Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichtenstein. These artists preceded and then reflected an era dominated by protest, rebellion and political upheaval. As a young teenager I was hooked and inspired. Against this backdrop of radical change all things seemed possible.
I am now a painter living and working in New York. I’ve lectured and exhibited my work both nationally and internationally. I’ve also worked as a graphic artist, educator and curator.
My paintings and works on paper are influenced by a multitude of artists and disciplines. I incorporate forms found in architecture, design, popular culture, art history and the unconscious. My reductive compositions and color mimic the low-tech graphics utilized in mid-century media, while also alluding to1960’s color field paintings.

Joanne Freeman
Freeman attended the University of Wisconsin, where she earned a B.S. in Fine Arts in 1976. She earned her M.A. in Studio Art from New York University in 1981. She has taught painting and drawing at NYU and The New School for Social Research and worked as a visiting artist and lecturer at The New York Studio School and the Massachusetts College of Art. Freeman is heavily influenced by the ideas of the Bauhaus School, which emphasized combining the ideas and techniques of art, architecture and design. She endeavors to present new forms in a simple way. Freeman has exhibited her amazing paintings extensively in galleries and museums, in solo and group exhibitions, throughout the US and internationally. The artist's solo show entitled Recent Paintings and Drawings was on display at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, NY, in February 2016. Her art has been reviewed in ARTnews and The New York Observer. The American artist paints with gouache on Khadi, a handmade Indian paper fashioned from long fibered cotton. Her oeuvre is exemplified by vivid colors, geometric shapes, hard edge lines, and curved, gestural marks painted against white backgrounds. Freeman presents a reductive visual language that references urban symbols and signs, architectural patterns, and the interplay between shadow and light.
Freeman's process involves taping off areas to create hard edges, and combining those areas of control with spontaneous mark making. The scale of her works and the marks she creates are both dictated by the extent of her physical reach. The resulting images express physicality, emotion, limitation and randomness, combined with a precise, minimalist aesthetic.

Ross Bleckner Abstract Oil Painting
By Ross Bleckner
Located in New York, NY
Ross Bleckner (American, b. 1949)
Untitled, c. 1970
Oil on canvas
43 x 34 in.
Signed verso: Ross B/ho
Ross Bleckner grew up in Hewlett, Long Island, New York; drawing all the time without being aware that other artists existed. He was the middle child between two sisters; his father manufactures electronic parts He attended New York University where Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and others were his teachers. He graduated in 1972, then spent a year at the California Institute of Arts. His contacts in the next few years were very fortuitous; Sol Lewitt and Chuck Close, Carl Andre, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, etc.
Bleckner is on the nervous side, beset by self-doubt, insomnia, and gloom. He is unpretentious, although he is bluntly handsome, with olive complexion, and a compact build. He is "10 percent that is superficial and 90 percent that has to do with the depths and that is threatened by living. He is a very complicated individual. He is a very, very morose, deeply feeling, hardworking artist- he takes a lot from within himself - but always, no matter how successful he is, he feels he is going to fall into those depths." 1
Bleckner first exhibited his work in New York in 1974. The following year he was given his first one-man show; he was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial.. Since about 1985 has addressed many of his paintings to the subject of AIDS- both documenting it as a historical phenomenon and commemorating specific individuals who have died.
Written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California.
