About the Item
Joseph Kardonne (1911-1985). Dancers, 1978. Gouache, watercolor and ink on paper, sheet measures 12 x 14.25 inches; 12 1/2 x 17 5/8 inches mounted on cardboard. Signed, dated and titled at right.
Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1911, Joe Kardonne first showed an interest in art at an early age. At 15 years old he turned professional by painting murals for a large department store in his hometown. He formed his own business and found success in the commercial art field with the Kardonne Advertising Agency. In the 1930's he branched out into photography. His photographs, even today, could be considered cutting edge. He soon discovered that his true passion was painting and decided to devote his life to the fine arts. He joined the Art Student's League in New York City where he painted along side such art-world legends as Thomas Hart Benton and Jackson Pollack, among others. Joe traveled the globe painting the exotic locations he visited and his work can be seen in many public and private collections all around the world.
In 1986 Joe retired to Ocean City New Jersey and set up a studio at 500 Bay Ave. He painted day and night always evolving and changing styles and points of view like the true master he was. He worked proficiently in all mediums and developed his very own "isms" that included Subtractionism, Explodism and Googleism. Joe found a local "family" at the Ocean City Fine Arts League where his inspiration was welcomed and his impact is still felt today. When Joe died on March 3rd, 2005, two still wet paintings were left propped against the wobbly wooden legs of a desk in his studio.
Joe was a philosopher and an accomplished musician as well as a brilliant artist whose body of work is phenomenal. The importance of his contributions will become even more apparent in the years ahead as his influence continues to impact the world of art.

Biography:
Shaped by his life experiences and a commitment to the practice of making art, the work of Murray Hantman represents a career of personal exploration and aesthetic refinement that took him from New York, to Los Angeles, back to New York and eventually to the serene, yet dramatic, coast of Maine where he worked as part of the artists’ colony on Monhegan Island. Born in Pennsylvania in 1904, Hantman’s family moved many times to follow his father’s business opportunities, eventually settling in New York. A childhood of economic instability and dislocation formed Hantman’s early years, making him independent and self-reliant from a very early age. Hantman’s father owned movie theatres and photography studios and, recognizing his son’s artistic ability, employed him to print and hand-color photographs as a child. When he was eleven and living in Michigan, a public school teacher arranged for Hantman to receive a scholarship to the Detroit Museum of Art School where after a year he was awarded another scholarship to study at the Detroit School of Design. He studied in Detroit for a year until his family abruptly moved to Alabama, interrupting his artistic and academic studies until the family moved to New York at the end of the first World War.

'Modern Dancers', pastel, ink and gouache on fine art paper by French artist, singer and sculptor, Mick Micheyl (1964). Two elegant young men are depicted in a graceful dancing pose, arms outstretched, their lithe bodies so agile and limber. Perhaps one of the dancers was her friend, Philippe, to whom the painting is dedicated on the bottom. The dedication says: 'For you Philippe, all my friendship'. Signed: 'Mick Micheyl'. The work has been newly framed and glazed after having been acquired in the S. of France. It is in fair vintage condition commensurate with age showing minor blemishing on the paper. Upon request a video of the piece can be provided.

About the Artist: Mick Micheyl (1922 - 2019) was born in Lyon and had a busy and rewarding artistic career as a singer, producer, reviewer, metal sculptor, artist. After having received training at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon she became a painter and decorator in the theatre but then commenced a career in the musical activities of a theatrical troupe. She won the ABC competition in Paris in 1949 with a song, Le Marchand de Poésie, which she composed herself. She then performed in many cabarets: L'Échelle de Jacob, Harlequin and Liberty's. In the 1950s she was one of the most important French cabaret singers of that period. One of her titles, 'Un Gamin de Paris', became one of the French standards and also performed by Yves Montand and Robert Clary...
