About the Item

"Wendover 2" by Joseph Ostraff, oil on panel, 36 X 31 inches, $4,800. "For me, paint documents the state of things, how I feel and what is at the forefront in my thinking—maybe it’s like the soup of the day. I do not consider this process to be anything special in itself. The paintings record the daily random and absurd associations I make, which seem interesting to me after the fact. The Domestic paintings are a case in point. My wife and I have six children. Four have left home. Three are married. We are left with two children, both currently in middle school. We have about five years and they too will move out. This is on my mind. I am thinking about the layers of memories and it comes out as layers of paint. Feeling nostalgic, I think about all the noise and activity our home has absorbed. In turn, I found children’s large vinyl decals from Angry Birds and Hello Kitty and use them as stencils to make my shapes. This is absurd of course, because we never had such things in our home—they seem like the ultimate kitsch at face value. But, I think the way I use these shapes as stencils transforms them. Now, they are more implicit and metaphorical. It is a classic case of appropriation. There are no literal correlations between a given memory and specific paintings- this process is just a starting point for play. " - Joseph Ostraff

"Untitled, 1974" by Claudia Sisemore, acylic on canvas, 58 x 56 inches, $7,200. Unframed. "I have a vague idea of what I am going to paint. I read that many artists are inspired by an idea before they begin their work and plan their approach and process based on that idea or muse. Others become inspired after they have begun working and watching colors, shapes and designs form. I basically belong the second group. Usually, after painting begins in a loose, free manner, I become excited by certain colors and patterns and continue from there." -Claudia Sisemore -- Caudia Sisemore says she was teaching English when artist David Chaplin (an equally popular and influential teacher) was at Weber and initially got her into landscape painting. “Then he took me to a show at the Art Barn and Lee [Deffebach] was showing there [with Don Olsen...
